Athlon XP being reported as Duron at POST

I have an Athlon XP 1700+ TBred "B" DLT3C - JIUHB0308SMPW. It had been working just fine but I have recently swapped it out of my main system and put it into another one. It was running hot (like 70 degrees C) so I changed the heatsink to another which fixed the temperature problem. Now when I reboot, it shows up as a DURON in the POST screen and in other windows utilities like CPUz.

Does this mean that a portion of my CPU (namely the L2 cache) might have gotten damaged somehow?

This is on an Asus A7N8X v2.0 motherboard.

You could run some tests using Super Pi... you should be able to do the 256k test at about the same speed as all the lower ones... if it's significantly slower, like closer to the 512k and 1 MB tests, I'd say the processor is damaged.

very weird

is the bios up to date?
also has the chip been physically modded at all?
and do you have the fsb set correctly? (i could imagine it happening if you were running a 100mhz fsb since the only amd products running that speed that use the new types of cores are all durons)

Second the fsb issue. Changing hardware at all makes nasty little changes in my bios settings, wonder why.

Thanks for all the replies/ideas. I am running the latest bios from Asus, so that's not the problem. As for FSB, it's set to 200 with a multiplier of 11. At POST, it's reports that the CPU is a 2.2 GHz Duron.

I inspected the chip a little more closely, and it looks like there is some physical damage on it. Take a look at this pic (it's not mine) PIC -- See the little black box in the bottom right area? Well, the "pin" at the bottom left of that small chip is GONE! (I have no idea how that happened) and I can't believe the CPU still worked! I'm assuming that must be a cache chip.

Anyhow, after remounting it after close examination, I can't get it to run anymore -- I think it's a dead duck.

I have had a T-Bird 1.4 get recongnized as a Duron it scored right where it was suppose to I think it was just a bios issue.

I saw somwone try to unlock a pally core and he didn't exactly know what he was doing. He ended up with 128k L2 cache instead of 256K and an unlocked processor. The cpu still worked but everything thought it was a Duron because of the cache i expect
