Athlon XP and Windows XP

To take advantage of the new instructions in the Athlon XP, do I need to do a fresh install of WinXP (meaning format, install)?
Or can I just re-install with the recovery option?

I really don't feel like formatting and re-installing all my apps.

TIA 😀

Hmmm...I never have reinstalled an OS when I am only changing the cpu...However I have never done that when there has been a fundamental hardware change either....

I am interested in knowing.....

My gut tells me you do not need to, but it makes some weird sense...

You shouldn't need to, as long as WinXP recognizes the new cpu as an Athlon, it should take advantage of all the instruction sets that the cpu has to offer.

Actually, I've heard to take advantage of the new SSE instructions w/ Athlon XP's, you DO need to reformat.

Sorry 🙁

A number of people have reported recently that they had to reinstall to enable the new instructions.

In order for windows to recognize SSE properly you do need to reinsatall but you do not need to reformat You can simply boot from your CD and then choose the repair option. This will install windows again overwriting your old copy and redect all the hardware in the system including your CPU. You will need to reinstall all of your drivers. The only thing retained is your installed programs and favorites etc. Hope that helps.

Hmm, well, you learn something new every day. You guys learned me good you did 😛
What do I know anyway, still running strong on my T-bird! woohoo
