Athlon XP 2700+ on a 133MHz mobo??

Probably asked before somewhere, but...

I've got a Gigabyte 7VRXP rev. 1.1 (f11 BIOS) motherboard and an AXP 2000+ right now. 1 stick 512MB PC2700 RAM. I'm itching to do some upgrades, and I've already done the faster hard drive thing...

Can I run an Athlon XP 2700+ on this board, which has a standard FSB of 266MHz DDR? Will the 2700+ run at it's given speed, or will it run slower because of a fixed multiplier x 133, instead of multiplier x 166?

If I increase the mobo's bus speed to 166MHz (and leave the memory at 333MHz DDR), any idea if the rest of the components will run happily (North/South bridge chips, PCI cards, AGP slot, etc) at this speed?

I'd probably upgrade the motherboard eventually, too, after dual-channel DDR boards become readily available. But one thing at a time....

I would be interested to hear the result of this also, because my Soyo KT333 doesn't have a BIOS option for 166MHz FSB and I hope that the new procs will work. If they don't then I will just wait for Barton and get a new mobo then with 400MHz FSB.

Not a clue if it would work... but with the 27 & 2800's you really want to go with a new mobo too. Taking advantage of the new tech and all. But aren't we all in the same boat.... new stuff coming down the pipe and we be chompin' at the bit! ;-) What to buy now that will be o.k. tomorrow! Damn, should have bought that NForce board!

got my eye on 2800 and nforce rig. Gotta great setup now but want to OC it with xtreme cooling. will buy around xmas sale time. should save a cool 100. I believe the 2700 would work as my sig rig will support both but check the gigabyte specs. page. they say 2600+ max. It's a shot in the dark. Why not get a 2600? you will never realize the potential of this chip anyway.

wish you luck.

Well I think I have decided to just wait for Barton and get whatever mobo will support it. Then I can do my next upgrade with Athlon64 or Prescott.

Um, I see no reason it would not, with a bios flash, the proc should be supported, and if you have ram that can handle it, it should work no prob. The fsb of the new procs are 166, and if you multiply that by 2, for ddr, you get 333. The kt333 boards can run that, and there should not be a problem with the higher fsb.

I would check the gigabyte site and see what they say, I am sure it will be supported. If not at first, I am sure it will be shortly.

I do not see the advantage of getting a kt400 mobo, unless you plan on overclocking or absolutly need serial ata/agp8x. I can live with out that, as I have nothing that requires it. Hell, I only use 2 of the 4 usb ports I got, and I have no firewire devices for my audigy, so I would not worry about it unless you got the $$$ burning in your pocket, and if you do, I will take your 7vrxp😉

Gigabyte specs say the fastest the rev 1.1 7VRXP will take is the 2600+/266MHz model.
The rev 2.0 7VRXP is spec'd as accepting the 333MHz Athlons.

The difference between the 1.1 and the 2.0, as far as I understand, is the thermal overload protection circuit. And that's it. Otherwise, they are the same AFAIK. They even run the same BIOS versions.

Well, perhaps after the first of the year, I'll give it a try (I'll be out of town for a bit, so no point in buying now and not being able to play with it).
Perhaps (crossing fingers) the 3000+ will be available by then, too. Heck, even newegg.com has the 2700+'s and the 2800+'s in stock now...
