I was at my girlfriend's house dinkin around on her computer and decided I wanted to overclock it. its an athlon xp 2600+ (the barton with 512kb cache / 333 fsb) with a very capable asus mobo. while sitting there for probably 5 minutes or so I got it up to 180x11.5mhz from 166x11.5 (360fsb) which was around 2.07ghz from 1.8 (I think), but my question is this... how overclockable are these and what kind of heats should I be lookin for through bios? and what is a reasonable overclock(for instance most e6400's at 3.2) for a chip like this?

I am completely unfamiliar with amd as I have never owned one. thanks all.

I had a Barton 2500+ with an Asus A7N8X motherboard, and I could get the CPU to around 2.4ghz (218*11). I kept it at 2.2ghz (200*11) 24/7.

Nearly every Barton ever made would do 2.2 Ghz. Quite a few people with XP 2600's ran them at 2.3 Ghz, a few on stock voltage. Most will require 1.70-1.75v for stable 24/7 2.3 Ghz operation, though.

I have a 2400+ Barton currently has over two years at 2.4 gHz at 1.725v in BIOS (1.69v actual). It runs all day long at 2.5 gHz at 1.825v in BIOS.

I can also run at 2.6 gHz at 1.90v actual, though the temperatures are higher than I like to see.

Those older Bartons are some serious overclockers, especially the ones that are unlocked. You got alot for the money.

You'll really want to watch your temperatures. AXP chips run a little on the warm side (well, compared to everything but the P4), and the stock heatsinks are, in my experience, only barely up to the task of keeping them cool at stock speeds.

what's a bad temp on the xp? I overclocked it to 2.3 ghz at 1.7v in bios. was right around 50 or so when I looked.

right on the money for hers, 1 hour orthos stable @ 1.7, i left it running when I left but she'll prolly shut it off before I see it again.
