Curious how much faster the 3700 could be on certain apps. I know sometimes it isn't that much faster but in terms of percent what kind of a real difference are we talking 30%, 40%, 50% ?

BTW: No overclocking will be done, this is for someone who wants a rock stable (business) machine so overclocking is out.

"real difference", in what?

giames? dvd burning? video editing? preparing the accounts?

LOTS. Except for the accounts, and dvd burning, or infact anything not bottlenecked by the cpu.

for price/performance ratio, go with the 2500+, although if you look at newegg, the retail 2600+ is at $85, whereas the 2500+ is at $90, if you aren't overclocking, go with that. It'll be great for business apps. The 3700+ is just too expensive for anything besides gaming, which it rocks O so hard at :)

I'll say close to 100%, if not more than that.

one hundred percent faster than an Athlon 2500? um, no.

I'd say my system feels slightly faster overall with my 3200+ A64 over what my XP2500+ felt like.

for an office PC, not any huge gains that are noticeable unless they are doing CPU intensive tasks.. (office job, doubtful) I'd go with the 2600+ like SneakyStuff suggested.

it really depends on what hes gonna do with it. I mean. for simple office tasks like word processing and using internet explorer he could even get away with a simple P2 system for 10 bucks. In games or really CPU dependant tasks the difference will be more noticable though.

It certainly depends on the projected uses. Just for a bit of "future proofing" the Athlon 64 are of use in normal activities. For many games, I doubt there is a difference in playing Quake 3 at 450fps on an Athlon64 or at just 200fps on an XP 2500
I don't feel there are many uses for a Athlon64, but right now I wish I would have purchased a better processor when I built my computer. A duron 600 is a bit slow compared to an Athlon 1000, which was then at a good price

go w/ an A64-2800 solution. Marginally more money than an AXP, (like maybe $80) and it will be more upgradeable. There are some decent A64 boards with video onboard too, if cost is a big issue, though if they are considering going w/ a 3700, I'm assuming cost doesn't matter that much.

What is the computer going to be used for? Go for a nice A64 (above 3200) if they are using it for CAD, video editing, 3d animation or something, otherwise it doesn't matter at all.

Cheap solution:
DFI Km400-MLV
Athlon XP 2500,2600, or whatever
512 megs pc3200 ram
80 gig hard drive (SATA or ATA)

Medium solution:
DFI K8M800-MLV
Athlon 64-2800 or Sempron 3100
512 megs pc3200
80gig SATA

Video editing and what not rig:
ASUS K8V SE DELUXE or similar (I'd stick w/ s754, unless money goes on trees, then go s939 and a really nigh end CPU)
A64-3200
1 gig PC3200
120 gig+ SATA, or if you really want to spend money go with raptors (don't bother with raid, not worth the $)

If stability is of the utmost importance:
Asus SK8V s940
Opteron 144 or 146
1 gig registered ECC pc3200 ram
I would be surprised if you ever get something w/ registered ecc to freeze up (for hardware reasons). You'll pay for it, but the stability will be unmatched.
