For an office-app PC, no overclocking at all. Cooler is better as it will be part of a silent PC. The larger core of the stripped down Barton should help cooling and the Sempron has a faster FSB (266 vs 333). I'm leaning towards the Sempron.

Any advice?

I need to be more specific and say it's the Socket A Sempron I'm looking at. The Socket 754 Sempron is clock for clock faster than the Socket A version. Most reviews focus on the Socket 754 so I'm having a harder time finding benchmarks for the Socket A version.

if i were you, i would buy a mobile barton 2000+ and run it at the 1.35v that it is designed to run at. it will be a lot cooler than either one of them, the same performance, and not much more expensive (oem desktop 2000+ costs $57 for a thorton, the mobile 2000+ costs $70). also, you will then be able to overclock with it later if you want to.

Do not buy the mobile Barton 2000+, especially not the one from Newegg. It is NOT a socket A CPU. The 2200+ and higher mobile chips are socket A, but the 2000+ is NOT socket A. In fact, even though their description in the refurb section explicitly says socket A, I purchases two of them and they turned out to be some funky small socket.

For an office-app PC, no overclocking at all. Cooler is better as it will be part of a silent PC.
Mobile Barton 2200+ or 2400+, preferably the 35W chip. The motherboard still has to be overclockable because otherwise the CPU will be stuck at a 6X multiplier. Just run the CPU at around 10x200 at default 1.35/1.45 volts and enjoy a fast, cool running system.

I'd like to keep this as budget as possible (hence not using a XP2500+ or something). I know it's not a big difference but then it's not a big difference to go a step up, and a step above that :p

Hell for that matter why dont you try your luck with a A64 DTR. Those when they work (most people find themselves needing to use a beta BIOS) run very cool especially since the A64's have heat spreaders.

Socket A likes 1:1 ratio w/ the DDR. So if you are not overclocking and already have PC2100, choose the XP at 266 fsb. If you are using PC2700, choose the Sempron.

Go with the Sempron 2400+. The 2200+ sempron's i've used run very cool. The 2400+ is the same price as a 2000+ but is faster, probably equivalent to a Athlon XP 2200+.

The sempron's are great budget chips, much faster than the durons were. Just built a 2200+ with the ECS combo from Fry's for my parents, runs nicely.

:)
