Dunno about the motherboard, I'm not familar with the chipset. You'd probably get back at least $50 for the mobo if you sell it off. At least you're getting a retail CPU. Go check it out. And sorry non-Fry's peeps, Outpost is not carrying this combo. They have the 1800 and a Soyo Dragon+ (266A) for $349, which is not a bad deal.

my simple question is:

WTH does it matter whether a CPU is retail or bare? as long as it works, what more is there important? Can somebody expound on this? ive always gotten OEM's and never had a problem....(and neither the peeps that i've built systems for)

OEMs usually come with only a 10-30 day warranty as opposed to the 3 year warranty on the retail versions. That said, very few CPUs fail after the 30 days.

(to Motherboard specs)

Lowest price I found for this Motherboard was $155. This is a good combo, indeed!

Anyone know if this offer is valid at Anaheim or Fountain Valley (Southern CA) or Arizona Fry's?

Thanks for the heads up, virtuamike!

<< Those are not the specs for the Dragon + but for some other Soyo MB >>

The originator posted the deal for the bundle that includes Athlon XP1800 and Soyo SY-K7ADA for $249
But he just mentioned that Fry's also has another bundle that includes the same CPU but with Soyo Dragon+ for $349

Yes, Fry's is unfortunately selling bare/OEM CPUs instead of the nice retail ones we used to get in their combo's. That's what I hate about Sacramento Fry's, they always try to rip you off because they're basically the only computer store in the Sacramento area. Trucomp doesn't even come close in terms of size, and even then their prices aren't super great. It's actually worth it to make the drive into the Bay Area just to pick up parts (plus food there is better too). There's a computer show this weekend though at the Scottish Rite Center, go to www.marketpro.com to get schedule, coupon, and directions. I haven't been to this one in a while.

** EDIT **
Egh, maybe I won't go. I only get a $2 discount, and normal admission is $7. If anyone's interested in going just PM me and I'll email you the $2 coupon so you don't have to sign up for their email list.

<< the ali magik 1 is slower than a kt133a >>

It was true for the initial release, but the new boards of this chipset are equipped with the stepping C and they are in the same league as the SiS 735 and KT266A. I have one of this SY-K7ADA, it can overclock nicely (voltage, frequency adjustable) and it is definitely as fast as the K7S5A. BTW, I got a similar combo at Fry's before Thxgiving (1600+ box and K7ADA for $149). What a steal !!
