Hi, I am having problems with my xp 1800+ with ecs k7vta3 combo from fry's. Its the new jihxb stepping that is supposed to overclock well but at default speed its showing cpu temps of around 58 degrees celcius. This seems a little high also the heatsink fan is at about 4000 rpms? Is that correct or is that a participating factor to the high temp. I am pretty sure installed everything correctly but i will check. If i take the heatsink off after its already been used, will the thermal tape still be good or will i have to replace it? Thanks in advance, sorry for all the newbie questions.

EDIT: Also, this may be related to the heat, but the it seems that the IDE detection seems to be taken longer than average.

Whoa... Maybe your motherboard just isn't reading the temps correctly. But yes thats a high temp for the default speeds. My fan is at 5500RPM on my XP 1800+. If you remove the heatsink you will have to replace the thermal tape as well as clean off anything still on the cpu itself. You might want to try a better heatsink. Maybe a Thermaltake SILENT BOOST or one of Thermalright's heatsink's.

Oh yeah what kind of case do you have? Are there case fans in it providing good air flow?

Thanks alot, i'm just using the retail stock heatsink.... and the case is just an old crappy case with no case fans which used to hold my p3 which i just took out... that could be another problem although ive been booting without the side panels on. I really wanted this to be a cheap backup budget system to my p4 but i guess i may have to get a better case and heatsink. thanks for the advice

Well you might not have to buy a whole new case. If it atleast has an area in the back of the case with small wholes then you can just add a fan to it. Same with the front of the case. Thats what I did. My Athlon XP 1800+ went from 45c+ temps down to 33idle, 37load at default speeds just by adding 3 fans. Add 1 or 2 fans in the font of the case at the bottom and set them to bring air in the case. Then add 1 or 2 fans to the back towards the top and set them to suck air out of the case.

cut holes in your old case. thats what i did. i also got a slk-800 cooler for my 1800 overclocked. i figure it was worth it since once overclocked, my cpu was fast as cpu's costing hundreds of dollars:) with socket pin mod you can change multiplier, thats how i oc.
