Good morning!

I have been searching online over this for a while but with no real answer.

I have recently upgraded my GPU to a Sapphire R9 270 dual X but I'm not sure if my rather old quad core 651k 3ghz is holding it back?

I have been looking at a mobo and cpu upgrade to a fx 6300 combination for about £130 but will I see much of an improvement gaming wise at this point?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated :)

Meh. I'd just overclock the CPU a little bit and not care too much. Wait for DDR4 mainstream systems with Intel Skylake and AMD Zen to make the jump.

Don't waste money on AM3+ and an FX at this time.

thanks for the advice... I've not done much in terms of overclocking, any tips in regards to the settings to change in the uefi bios? I know about clock multipliers but with regards to voltages I seem to just find conflicting information constantly.

It will be game and resolution dependent whether it holds it back enough to be an issue or not. And DX12 should lessen the CPU strain so it'll actually be less of an issue going forward. From a quick google of that CPU you're close to the spot I'll be in when I migrate my 7850 over to my Q6600 rig but that's still my plan (despite admittedly being tempted by the occasional cheap i3 systems that pop up). But getting something new now for my (or your) card is probably not the best use of funds.

I think it depends on the game. I assume you are playing at 1080p. Overall, it seems like a decent match for the new gpu.

thanks for the replies... Tbh I have looked at usages from my cores and gpu and they both seem to max out at 1080p however I haven't looked extensively in the usage at different settings etc.

I have been able to play metro LL on ultra no physx etc pretty decent framerates but planetside 2 does seem to struggle but I need to look into the options more.

I do see alot of benchmark videos of the GPU and although they often use much more recent CPUs frame rates vastly differ.I am pretty skeptical of these at times. My 3d mark 11 scores well about 8200 on graphics on performance but physics and cpu are less than half that result?
