I am wondering how much faster would the X3 be over the X2 for everything... I can't seem to find any decent benchmarks comparing the two....

Thanks!

Mars: The only benchmark (PC performance test) for CPUs I could find showed the Athlon II x3 455 at 2731 vs the x2 5200 at 1391. Are you referring to an Athlon x3 or Athlon II x3? What are the other specs of your rig?

a quick google search shows the "Athlon X3 450" is an Athlon 2.

I have an Athlon II X3 455 in a rig running Win 8 consumer preview. I was surprised how quick it is. In addition, the mb Asus M4A77TD has a bios feature to unlock the 4th core so I have a 4 core. Plenty of CPU HP.

Some of the Athlon II X2 and Athlon II X3s were capable of unlocking an extra core(s), L3 cache or both. Although some unlocked chips were not always stable, but the lucky ones had know problems. These day's the unlocked chips are few and far between.

I have a AMD Athlon II X3 455 3.3Ghz but mine does not unlock the fourth core. The Athlon II X3 455 is a great CPU and has never let me down and i've played some intensive games. I was surprised by how well the Athlon II X3 455 ran Mass Effect 3. :)

Agreed, the X3 is much better than the older X2 chip you have. Should see a nice gain in games and multi-tasking.

I have a Core i7 2600K rig, but I seem to upgrade so much and when I am in between builds after someone buys my rig, I have nothing to use while I wait for the next best thing or even waiting for the stuff to show up in the mail.

So I am trying to decide since I got this Asus M378A-EM MB, 4GB of DDR2 800, and Athlon X2 5200+ for free, trying to decide if I would be better getting the CPU for $77 or throwing it out and buy some low end Core i3 CPU setup for a standby rig....

There's really no IPC gain between the Athlon X2 and the Athlon II, so you're only looking at the 18% clockspeed difference for general tasks.

What is the X2 not doing? I'm using an X2 5200+ right now and it's great. My BiL's Phenom II X4 945 is no faster for general tasks. Very few things use more than 2 cores effectively.

The X2 is good for general use and getting a X3 or X4 for general use is a waste but there are a few things which require more cores than 2 such as gaming.
