Doesn't the Opteron require a 940 board? Wouldn't my cost savings be negated by purchasing the registered RAM and 940 board?

No, the Opterons mentioned above are S939

Shouldn't a dual-core Opteron at 2.2/2.4Ghz (ie, Opteron 175/180) perform identially to an Athlon64 X2-4400+/4800+?

I know when the A64s first came out I saw several articles looking at how much the cache size impacted performance; has anyone done a similar one for the dual-core versions?
