Hopefully this isn't a stupid question , but I'm curious if anyone knows how far the 4200 can be overclocked with the stock cooling. I know I've heard people say this is an excellent overclocking chip, and my old P4 I was able to overclock by 15% just through the BIOS with stock cooling, so any insight would be appreciated =)

Well Anand got his up to 2.7 with a $30 cooler, so I think you could do 2.4 without a sweat on the stock cooler.

I got it to 240x10.5=2.52 easily with voltage at 1.425 in bios (actual voltage reading differ). Had a little problem with 240x11=2.64, but got it tweaked to run stable currently with voltage at 1.45-1.475. Runs idle at 35-40 and load at <50 now in the hot summer days.

[edit] Orginally I use Zalman 7000Alcu. Swich to TT BigWater just wanted to play with water cooling coz the kit fits very well insdie the P180 case. There's not a big differece in cooling performance. [/edit]

He wants reports of ocing with STOCK HSF!!! I would imagine 2.4ghz should be no problem but could be nearing the high 50's....

I am at 2.475ghz so far with the stock cooler, 51c max temp with 2 instances of prime95. I am out of town at the moment or would have tried for higher already. I may pull the water cooling out of my p4 system and see how high I can take it.

What volts?

My 4200@ 2.62 1.65 v stays in the 45 range with a Zalman 77000..

I've got the Stock HSF.. I was thinking about playing with it, just to see how it does..

2.4 Should work fine with stock cooling. You could probably get 2.5. IMO you could get higher, but I don't think it will pass 24 hours of Prime..... 2.4-2.5 will pass 24 hours of prime nicely with stock if you don't have a dud CPU.

2.3 tops. If you use your CPU at load all the time, it will crash if you go above 2.3 ghz.

2.4-2.5 im guessing

but if ur gona spend a good chunk of change on the damn processor, why not spend another 20-40 bux for a good air cooler? should be a drop in the bucket if u got the flow for a 4200+

I think I have it at 1.45v, I can double check in a couple of days when I get home.

Sorry to be off topic, but how do you run 2 instances of Prime95? I tried launching the program twice, but only one Prime95 window appears (and one process when I look in Task Manager). Couldn't find it in the FAQ at mersenne.org, either. Thanks!

Just was able to check this, thanks for all the replies. I'm going to be getting the Antec P180 case, since I saw someone mention it.

Can any of you recommend any specific fan products that will do better than the stock cooling, and aren't too expensive? Preferably something I can pick up at BB/Micro Center since I want to put it on right when I first build.

I generally leave my PC running 24/7, although I obviously don't tax it that often since I'm sleeping at times. If I could get 2.4/2.5 without doing anything drastic (water) then I would be pretty happy. Thanks

Yah. Maybe thats why I (a first time overclocker) was able to get my 3800+ X2 to 2.4 ghz on stock cooling. Max temp 52C. It ran two instances of Prime95 stable for 3 hours before I had to close them cause I wanted to use more than a web browser. The 4200+ X2 is clocked at 2.2 ghz to begin with, so I doubt it has any problems getting to 2.4 ghz.

If chinkgai's answer wasn't clear..

Put a copy of P95 in each of two folders. Start both. Stop them , and use ' advanced options ' to set CPU affinity; one for each cpu.. Then crank em up..

It was interesting, when I started testing my overclock; one core would error out and the other one would keep chugging along...
