Athlon X2 3800 Load Temps are HIGH

So my X2 is now overclocked with vCore at around 1.4. Im using a thermaltake big typhoon, but i was lazy and used stock thermal compound (white stuff :Q). will some ac5 help? because the temps are becoming scary.

You have to use AS5 to get effective cooling from the Typhoon. It's a waste to not use AS5 with that monster.

OK Ty for comfirming, but how long should i continue to run this at 60 degrees under load? im gonna be gaming, and i probably wont gt the store until next week.

That seems way too high for vcore of 1.4.

Arctic Silver 5 might help, but most of all what would help would be to remount the heatsink. Take it off, clean it with alcohol and coffee filters, make sure everything is perfect.. and mount it with some AS5. No way it should be 60 with only 1.4v.

case airflow is my guess. Open the case and tell us what the load temps are first.

That does seem pretty high for that voltage. I can get mine to 64 deg. C if I run two copies of Prime95, but normal loaded temps are 54 deg. C or so, and that is running something like BF2. Idle temps are 38 - 42 deg. C, and I am going to put better cooling in to get them down. My vCore is 1.475.

oh yeah well haha i was actually running 2 copies of prime with the most intensive torture test. so i guess im high but it wasnt that bad according to you markbnj. but nevertheless, ac5 will be bought and the hs will be remounted by this friday.

^I agree 100% . Or, (as some of the more dramatic here would say), it's a travesty 😉 .

Seriously, you've gotta use AS5. Just make sure you completely clean off that white gunk with rubbing alcohol, then apply a thin layer of arctic silver 5 (as per their directions on the site).

How much of the white gunk did you put on? If your temps are that high, then I bet you put way too much. You're supposed to spread it razor thin, not like toothpaste on a brush 😉.

Even if you are running two instances of prime95 and overclocking with 1.4v, you shouldn't be seeing 60C- unless you either have serious air circulation problems in your case, or you have installed your heat-sink improperly. Even without using AS5, it shouldn't be that high.

I used to be on air cooling with an XP-120, and I was running at around 1.47v at 2700mhz, and my temps only reached 51C with 2 Prime95's running. My case ventilation was good, and it was mounted properly with AS5.

Absolutely. In fact, 60c is over the max temp for X2's supposedly.

Either your monitor is off, HSF is not mounted well, too much thermal grease, or too high case temp... or something else, either way, a situation that needs fast fixing

65C iirc the max for X2s, but yeah, that is high with a big typhoon. I load at about 56C with a zalman 7700 and the crappy goop. Got some AS5 and a big typoon on the way though.
