Athlon to Opteron?

I currently have an Athlon 3000+ OC'd to about 2560 Mhz at the moment.

Just wondering if realistically it's worth upgrading to an opteron 144?
I only have a factory HS & Fan on the athlon - would this work with the opteron or would i have to upgrade that as well?

Mainly use this system for gaming. Thanks,

no it's not, your venice, right?, is oc-ed just fine, maybe an opteron will OC higher, but I have seen 3000+ venice's go to 2.7-2.8 so maybe your mobo is holding you back, and won't let that opteron go any higher either. You're better of buying a cheap 3800 x2 toledo at newegg for 90 bucks, that should be a decent improvement.

The Newegg Toledo 3800+ X2 is a good deal for those upgrading on the 939. Some are running pretty hot though, so you might want better cooling than the plain jane AMD HSF. We built one up, and it runs 2.6GHz, 54 degrees C on dual Orthos with the top of the line AMD heatpipe HSF. I know of another build using the same CPU running at 2.4GHz that hits 60 degrees C on the AMD heatpipe. That's pretty warm. Of course Orthos runs the temps up more than normal use would.

I would say no, go with geezermans plan for dual core, you may see an improvement then.

yeah venice core - I'm running it pretty conservative right now - that's with stock cooling at stock voltage.
It's on a DFI lanparty ultrad NF4, so i think i could be more aggressive, just I'd rather leave the voltage low.

thanks for the responses though - i'll look for a dual core instead.
