Athlon T-bird 700mhz heat problem

I have an alpha on my t-bird but something seems wrong with the way it is contacting the cpu, after i take off the heatsink i can tell where one half of the processor has been pushing very hard against the alpha and the other half isn't even touching it, i tried filling in the gap with heatsink grease but my temp was reaching 57c so i decided to shut down the comp. Anyone know a reason as to why it would not be sitting flat? I really need to get the computer going as soon as possible so any help would be appreciated. Oh btw i am using an Asus A7V and using the temp probe to get my temperatures. And my alpha is the one with the copper insert on the bottom.
