Was at OD the other day looking for a game And one of the sales reps was talking to a Professional looking man and showing him a HP Computer. They where there for quite some time. Later they walked away and she said Intel keeps coming out with the New Northwood CPU's but the AMD Athlon keeps beeting them speed wise. But we are not sure of the reliability of the Athlon.

None of my AMD CPU's have ever failed EVER. Well maybe the K6 233 hanging on the wall but it worked when I took it out ;)

I have had the K6 line from 166 all the way up to 400 and the 400 is still in operation. And the other too I would assume they got sold during upgrades.

Now Have a XP 1800 and its going strong with out a single problem. Not one. Ok Jonnyguru don't count my bad luck with Raid :)

So why are people going around saying AMD CPU's are not reliable? I say they are

That is because the computer shops sell really crappy mohterboards for AMD CPUs. There is only 2 computer shops that I know of around me that sell AMD stuff at all, and they only sell AZZA and PC Chips motherboards for AMDs. Then they put it together and it sucks. AMD CPUs don't suck, they just aren't supported enough by local retailers. If you go to a local PC shop looking to build a Intel rig, they have all kinds of different quality brand motherboards that you can buy. It also takes a little more precation to build an AMD system. It isn't hard to put a HS/F on without chipping the core as long as you're a little precatious. I think a lot of it just has to do with the non knowlegeable PC users that have only owned Intel brand PCs and want an advantage over AMD since they are being matched in performance so they say that Intel is more reliable.

Most of the Companies here that build Systems use ECS Boards.

Have never seen a Soyo or a Biostar or a MSI or Asus or Giga-Byte or anything like that even.

ecs boards themselves aren't actually that bad. they only lack features and some decent quality control. otherwise, they work and perform well. people who complain about ecs boards are the ones who suffer from indecent quality control.

ECS board are a good choice for a system is PRICE for 55.00 you can't beat that!!!

AMD CPU are as reliable as Intel cpu's no doubts about that, its the third party hardware that AMD have no control of.....
so.....

Ignorance.
I have a co-worker who has been going through hell, crashes, BSOD, black screens, the CD burner barely running at 1X!, etc, with his P3 450 mHz system for the last couple of years! His tolerance for poor performance and instability is much higher than mine.

I suspect his problem is caused by having 5 ide devices running on his system at one time. But he is not willing to unplugged one of the ide devices to find one.

He is considering getting a new system. I told him if he is considering Intel that he should get a Northwood with Rambus ram. I also recommended AMD because he would save money for the the same level of performance. (He does not overclock.)

He said he knew AMD offered more for the money but he did not want to invest in a system that was too far from the mainstream. Then he pointed out that Apple was good for graphics work but was incompatable with Wintel.

Internally my shaking my head, I dropped the subject.
