...did a search and couldn't find anything.

what sort of performance are people getting with their *new* T-bird Athlons? I know that with the older versions of S@H didn't have the AMD utilizations, but I believe the new one (2.04 GUI+)does - correct me if i'm wrong. I'm going to get a new athlon in the next two weeks or so and i wanted to know if it's going to be faster/slower/same speed as a similarly clocked p3.

The cpu you mentioned will perform slower than a P3 at the same clock speed with v2.4 and I believe (although I may be wrong) but in v2.7 it's still slower than the P3 although much closer.

From my understanding the seti client doesn't use P3 or Athlon optimizations. As you know Seti is very memory dependant and this is why the P3 systems are faster.

Seti v2.4 works on chunks somewhere between 512kb-1mb. This is why the Xeon cpu's with 1mb L2 cache are so fast. And why the old P3's with 512kb of L2 are faster than the Coppermines with all else being equal in the system. The new client works on smaller chunks at a time. Somewhere close to 256kb. That's why the coppermines and the older P3's perform almost identical with all else being equal. The smaller chunks allow the data to fit neatly into the coppermines L2 cache inturn reducing the trips to main memory and speeding seti up.

Off course all of this is just my understanding and may be totally wrong. If so I'm sure someone will gladly correct me. I hope so at least, so you can get a correct answer.:)

BTW all of my rambling was considering v2.7, the later betas have added science calculations and are slower than v2.7 so I don't know how the Athlons stack up using the later revisions. When v3.0 comes out it give totally different times anyway.:D

I've heard that the i486 command line client can also be faster on AMD processors.

I tried the I-486 cmdline version on my machines and it was no help, no hurt either.

p3does better since it will stand more fsb overclocking, whatever you do
get the memory and bus running as fast as it can stand for best times.

Happy alien hunting :0)

thanks guys, especially for that link BLACKBEARD. now lets see if you can answer me this - if the 2.7 beta version is only for beta testers, how can i use it?

Tetsuo You're welcome, I hope that helped.

Beta testing is supposed to be done by folks that seti wants to test
their new version, but many people have been running the new version(s)
without getting a nasty result from the seti people. I have'nt tried the
new versions yet maybe soon.

I've been running seti on a ram drive with good results, a crash costs
me dearly if I lose the wu and the work done. Overall it is a plus.
My 750@840 will turn in 5:50 times regularly.
