athlon or pentium?

i want to upgrade my p3 450,but need to know what's better for me.i have my eye one the p3 1 gig or the athlon "t bird"1 gig.will the athlon perform as good as the p3?is the athlon compatable with all programs and games?need your input on this matter!thanx.:confused:

If you don't have to buy a new mobo, go for the P3, but if you want to overhaul your system, definitely go for the Athlon.

A P3/450 motherboard 'should' support the P3/Celeron coppermines. I think getting a Celeron2 (best if 800MHz+) and overclocking the hell out of it will be your cheapest and your best bet. It will be fine for the next year on an overclocked celeron. Then you might want to upgrade to AMD.
