Athlon or P4 faster @ seti

Clock for clock, the Athlon XP easily defeats the P4 at Seti. In fact, the fastest Athlon XP's are about as fast as the 2.2 gig Northwood P4, despite Intel's MHZ lead.

Actually, I believe that SETI is more FSB dependant than anything else, which is why the Pentium 4 makes a decent showing. With the Athlons, it takes DDR memory to get the fastest times.

The RC5 and ECCp progams are completely floating point dependant - Athlons completely dominate in those projects.

I haven't done many P4's, so I haven't had many to compare. But, I can tell you that the P4-1.6Ghz performs roughly the same as a TBird 1.4Ghz at 5:15 per WU. The Athlon XP 1700+ (1.47Ghz core) destroys it at 3:45. Building a P4-1.8Ghz this week, I'll see how it does.

Once you turn on Hyper threading the P4 realy gives the Athlon a run for it's money.

The top of the range P4 easily beats the top Athlon.

But at what cost premium?

theres a pretty big initial cost premium. you could probably build 2 athlons (or a dual or whatnot) for the price of a 2.2 northwood and get a lot more WUs out of it. of course, the dual athlons have a higher recurring cost (energy). cost/wu might still be lower, though.

the L2 cache has a lot to do with how fast you do a wu......more l2 more mflops it can still use after a peak eh.....i notice my old athlon 1.2 c core can do at least 4 to 5 wu a day. Now i use a PIII-S 1266 and unlike the old pIII or athlons it has 512l2 and it does around the same amount as the athlon even thoe the old PIII could not hold a thing to athlons. so your cache and fsb is what really makes a differ eh!

athlon 1.2 c : 250+ avg peaks around 800 (100mhz fsb 128L1 256L2 )
PIII-S : 300 avg peaks around 553 (133mhz fsb 32L1 512L2 )

Now this might not be on everyones pc but it was with mys either way there both fast cpus.
