Here I am, since the last 12 years I build my own computers for the home, my friends and coleagues. From the old 386, tekram or promise caching controler to my new tekram dc390u3w. I try to keep up with technology since then. I have a problem now that I did not encounter in the past. Twice a year, I turn over my board, cpu, and memory. Now, I am at the end of my turnover window with my D845EBG2 with a 2.4/533 and 2x512 crucial 2.5 2100 ECC. To eliminate lost, I sell when the product still attractive. Now, I am looking around for the replacement. I do not want an HT 3.06 because at $690 bucks, I will be a big time looser in 6 months from now. I do not want a 7205 because they are high cost 6 layer board that I will have to pair with an high price incoming CPU. I look at AMD and I think they got it. You can have two MP2000 for 300 bucks. It is half the price of an HT and 1 more gighz of speed. Now I said ok to myself, lets take a look at the MB chipset that are behind this engine. There is AMD with the 760mpx that is the only one recomended by AMD and are used from Gigabyte, MSI and Tyan. That chipset has an engineering flaw dealing with USB and everybody is giving an USB card with it. I was long enough and now I am getting to my conclusion. Are AMD thinking only about the future with Barton and forget about the present? Is HT better in multitasking than a pair of MP running 1ghz faster? Where Is VIA since 1 year regarding is chipset support with MP? Why SIS never looked at it?
I am sure I am missing something here.... I would like to know about the consistance of my ignorance. I would appreciate any kind of light that will explain why Intel and friends are the only one to invest in the "ne plus ultra" importance of their chipset.
