Athlon MP and Athlon XP

I am thinking about making a dual machine but I have the following questions..

Athlons all have multiproccessor functionality,
Thunderbirds had some problems with it which the Athlon MP fixed. Optimizations for multiproccessor and whatnot.

Considering that the AthlonMP's and AthlonXP's have practically the same core, I would hope that the XP contains those same optimizations. Am I wrong? The XP's are cheaper and I would like to get more bang for my buck if I can.

Is there any reason to go for MP processors over XP processors?

I guess that is the root of the question.

The L5 bridge. I connected them with a pencil, popped them in, and here I am.

Thanks alot on the dual processor issue.

Oh, and also, any recommendations on a good dual processor motherboards? I was thinking of getting the Tyan Thunder with the 2 lan cards. Saves me the trouble of buying them seperately.

Additionally! Is there any word out on penciling the multiprocessor capability in the new thourghbreds?

If you can afford a thunder, save yourself the headaches and potential problems, and just get the real MP chips.

doesnt hte MP chips have 384K L2 Cache rather than the XP's 256K?

Is that correct or did i read somthing wrong somewhere. And if so, in what applications specifically would the extra L2 cache improve performance? Say for pure number crunching ability

they dont have MP 2600+'s yet do they? fastest I can order from my main supplier is 2100+s

Im thinking of getting hte tyan MPx mobo as well, and was goign to go wtih two XP2400+'s in hopes of being able to overclock htem a bit, not sure if thats possible on a tyan

The MP and XP are identical feature wise.

"they dont have MP 2600+'s yet do they? fastest I can order from my main supplier is 2100+s"

No, but technically speaking there are no 2600+ XP's either. The MP chip is usually 1 speed grade behind the XP as it takes longer to qualify an MP CPU. The fastest MP chip currently available is the 2200+, which is the fastest XP you can currently buy as well.

AMD SMP systems do not OC well if at all. Do not buy them with that intention.

I have to disagree with that one.... The MSI K7D Master does quite well in that department. It is one of the most stable AMD boards that I have had the pleasure of running.
I never consider any dual (SMP) motherboards to have overclocking abilities. The Tyan Thunder/Tiger motherboards don't have any options, so I was extremely pleased to see that the MSI K7D Master-L offered some overclocking features in the BIOS. In this BIOS page I was able to increase FSB ... options include Default, 133, 135, 140, 144 and upto 150Mhz (max). CPU ratio (multiplier) can be adjusted aswell as the Vcore voltages.
