Hello,

I am looking at upgrading my computer. I am considering an Athlon 1.2 ghz, but I have been out of the upgrading scene for some time, so I would like to get some advice. I had a P3 500 but it was my roommate's and he took the mobo and proc when he moved out.

I would like to know what recommendation everyone has. I don't need anything blazing fast because all I mostly do is read a few news web sites and play counter-strike. So I would like an Athlon 1.2 ghz and a motherboard for it. What recommendation does everyone have for a proc and mobo, and what is the difference in the Athlon and the Athlon-C processors. My memory is PC133, so would this be compatable with an Athlon 1.2 ghz?

Thank you!

i don't think people still buy birdies anymore ^^... i'd recommend a Athlon XP.. they are 20 bucks more than the birdy 1.2ghz and i'm sure the price/performance ratio between the two are drastic. The motherboard can be to your liking. If you want something cheap, get a ECS K7S5A. If you want a little more performance, Shuttle AK31A. If you want real performance, EpoX, Asus, Abit will do. However, it may also depend on what type of ram you have.

My Athlon 1800+ came from mr. fedex delivery man last week and it LOOKS really fast in the box it came in. Its an xmas gift so all I can do is look at it until I get it on tuesday. But I have had a 900mhz tbird for a year now and it has servered me very well. I think AMD is a great choice and you may as well get an XP. Also, I would consider getting rid of that PC133 and getting some DDR - RAM is so cheap anymore that you really should think about going DDR. Otherwise, you are spending money on a new motherboard with older technology. Just my $.02.
