Athlon Classic 850 works great...but classic 950 won't ....

I have just purchased a classic 950 and tried to put it in my rig:
Athlon 850
ASUS K7V
Alpha P7125 HS/F
TD2 GFD
256mb Mosel Vitel PC143
CL GTS2 64mb Det. 3
CL SB live
Maxtor 20 gig 7200rpm HD
Samsung 16X DVD
Mitsumi 4X CDRW
Enlight 300w with 6 fans

I did not use the TD2 on it. The computer will post but it locks when it gets to windows. I'm thinking great...a defective processor, and like a dummy I ripped the case off before testing it.. Well it just so happens I had a rig that I was building for someone that I was gonna put my 850 in..so I threw the 950 in it and it worked just fine....so I'm wondering what gives...any ideas!!
 
Whats the numbers on your Classic. If they begin with K7 then its a true classic. If they begin with Axxx its a BIRD. More info or send me a PM . Did you just rip off the case or the heat plate as well ??
Does the process have the cache chips (thats a classic) or no cache (BIRD).
