Im thinking of overclocking my Athlon Classic 800 on a K7V
my questions are how do you change the cache divider in Windows 2000? is there a GFD that will control the divider as well?

also what is the default voltage for the Classic 800 and what would be the highest "safe" voltage to try if you have good cooling?

would 1ghz be reachable?

To answer a couple of your questions. In the Bios on your ASUS K7V there is a way to change the cache divider. I have the board and that is how I do it. I'm not sure where in the bios it is though...If I were home I could tell you. And yes there are GFD's out there that do have the changeable cache divider on them..but I don't know the name. I'm only going off of memory..but I think the 800 is 1.7 or 1.75 volts...one or the other. I wouldn't go any higher than 2.0 v and 1ghz might be obtainable..just the luck of the draw on what your actual core. If you have any further questions, feel free to PM me...

It is on the advanced tab. But you need to get a bios after 1007, i think. go to k7v.com and download the newest (1008-d, I think). You don't need the GFD for cache control. Get one with multiplier (duh) and vcore (since the K7V's voltage jumpers are a pain to reach without removing the AGP card) control. k7oc is the one I use. vcore and multiplier control.

ok I guess I have an older bios cause I do not see the setting to adjust the cache divider.

I have never updated a BIOS in Windows 2000 only 98. Do I go about it any different way?

Hey. Every BIOS flash I have ever done was in DOS mode (no DOS in W2k, though, right?). Boot from a floppy, maybe?

You have to do nothing different to flash your bios then what you have done in the past...good luck...

1008c is the first bios to have cache divider (I think it is beta). About safe voltage, I have a 700@900 running at 1.9 V. It never goes above 44 deg (measured close to the core). Stay under 2 V and you'll be fine. Get the cheapest gfd you can find, they differ mostly in handling, not in performance.
