Athlon Classic 700, Gorb Slot A, KA7-100 OVERCLOCKING?

I friend of mine has this hardware:

Athlon Classic 700 (in plasic case)
Golden Orb Slot A
Abit KA7-100

We tried overclocking, but ALL speeds over 700 produced errors. The Gorb Slot A clip places the heatsync/fan combo a bit far from the CPU core, it seems. the only way to get it to post after trying to overclock is to take out the ram, turn it on, then turn it back off. Any ideas why this might be the case?

I'm not into buying much more (maybe a GFD if it was sure to bring more MhZ), or breaking anything, and I don't want to solder :] He's using PC100 RAM, and I've played with all the divisor settings in the BIOS I can stomach. It's just such a pain to have to boot it up w/o RAM to try again, and it freaks him out when I'm doing it :]

Thanks...

(Damn, overlocking this Intel was a lot easier)

Oh yeah, I did use thermal paste, as usual. Perhaps advice on how/if it's a good idea to attach the Golden Slot A Orb directly to a the naked chip? This would involve removing the plastic case, which I am somewhat comfortable with, I would take my time of course. This also opens the chip up for possible GFD action as well, but how to attach the Slot A Orb w/o a CPUcase?

I don't know much about the slot gorb, but I it attaches to the heatplate of the cpu, which in turn is attached to the core. It should be obvious how to attach it, otherwise check the manufacturers site. Don't try and attach it to the core, I think it is rather difficult.

For serious overclocking get a gfd. Your errors might be due to the memory not cutting it over 100 mhz. You could try and up the voltage and disable spread spectrum. I'm sure there are other bios tweaks of the mobo that others might help you with (I have another mobo myself)

Attaching the GORB isn't a problem, it's attached and working (mostly) at the stock 700mhz. What I'm worried about is that it's attaching so far away from the core, that it's holding back the overclock, perhaps confirmation and a way to attach it directly to the core?

Remember, the KA7 can run the RAM (supposively) asynchronously to the CPU bus speed, so the RAM shouldn't be a factor... right? KA7 is using the VIA KX133 chipset I believe.

I'm just surprised it won't overclock past 700 with the KA7-100 and the Slot Golden Orb. Obviously my Intel was able to hit a nice speed... think simply adding a GFD would do the trick? Basically, what should I expect?
