Athlon 750 + Asus A7V CPU Usage problems...

This system is chowing CPU usage time like nothing I have ever seen. In the Win98 system monitor it is averaging 80% CPU kernel usage...even after shutting down all running proggies from the Win98 task manager with the exception of Explorer and System Monitor itself. Device manager shows no splats. The latest VIA 4-in-1 was applied with the exception of the VIA ATAPI drivers as they seemed to cause some problem with the cd-rom (?). All updates from MS were downloaded from Windows Update including IE 5.5. The only thing that seemed unusual...this system produces gawd-awful amounts of heat. I have a case fan up front and one of those "PCI slot dual fan coolers that have the two directional fans on the end of "tubes" you can extend" in the back in addition to the standard p/s fan and the chrome orb. I have to keep the case out in the open or the mobo will overheat and I will get a bios warning. The case is an AOpen ATX mid-tower...I think AOpen's first try at an ATX case so perhaps that is a contributor due to lack of proper inter-case airflow.

Here is the system configuration...

Hardware: Athlon 750 TBird on an ASUS A7V mobo, BIOS Flashed to 1004a version. Thermaltake Chrome Orb. 128mb Mushkin Rev. 2 PC-133 SDRAM configged at CAS-2 7ns 143Mhz. IBM Deskstar 75GXP HDD on the UDMA100 controller. Deskstar 22 GXP on primary IDE. Toshiba 40x on secondary IDE. Hercules 3D Prophet II MX v/c (not using Detonator3's atm...still on the oem Herc drivers. SB Live. External 56k USR. PS/2 mouse (cheap one...nameless), PS/2 KB. Again, after a boot up, I shut down everything except Explorer and System Monitor and the CPU usage had settled at 80%. This K6-2-400 I am posting this msg on is sitting around 5% with 3 copies of IE open, Outlook express and about 7 things in my system tray. My suspicion is that it is related somehow to a mobo driver but I dunno for sure. Anyone have any ideas?? I will monitor this thread if yoiu need me to provide any additional info. Thanks!!!
