Athlon 700 Classic to T-Bird 800 worth the upgrade?

Hey all,

Looking for some thoughts on a possible minor upgrade. I found a 800 Slot A T-Bird for $49.95 and am thinking about buying it. My current rig has a Classic 700 in it. Do you think it's worth the upgrade? I'm really not ready to do a full MB/CPU upgrade right now, but $50 I can swing.

FWIW I mainly surf, play RPG's (BG2), Run Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and the like.

Thanks for your thoughts.

:)

I dont think you'd notice that big of a difference, but for $50, cant lose much ;)

I'd say save the cash. If you've got the upgrade hankerings, you can pick up an FIC AZ11 and Duron 800 for $97, and that has a nice upgrade path with it with a socket-A board. If you'd rather wait and get a DDR board, then definately save up and not bother with the T-bird. You really won't notice the difference in speed, but if you wait and pick up a faster T-bird, you'll DEFINATELY notice a difference. :)

In your case, invest the $50 somewhere else, like a Santa Cruz sound card, or a new keyboard and mouse if you find a better set out there, or just set it aside for your system fund.

The AZ11 is the tweakers enemy. I just about messed mine up rigging it up to change the multipliers.......it worked though. Glad I got rid of that thing.

Also remember that Slot A boards are not guaranteed to work with Slot A T-Birds.

Thanks for the replies. You've all pretty much confirmed what I was thinking. I think I'll be waiting until this fall/winter and look into a DDR Athlon4 upgrade.
