Athlon 64x2 vs opteron

I'm just wondering which one I would get more bang for the buck out of, the x2 3800+ or the opteron 170 dual core. I'm also planning to have 2 gig's of ram and a raid 5 array with 5 seagate 7200.8 300GB drives.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Opteron will PWN any mid-range CPU out there.

The Physical difference between the 170 and 3800+ X2 is the Cache capacity and the amount of HT I/O links. So, I don't think that's enough to justify the price when discussing retail box for retail box.

Theiananator, do you know which A/V application you're using? I now understand and learned that Pinnicale is becoming aggressive with their base requirements for LiQ 7. It would be hard to recommend either combination before knowing the actual listed software. Since the component requirements can vary from oem to oem.

Opterons go through more rigorous testing than regular Athlons. That "could" mean you have a chip more likely to overclock.

I'll be using Adobe Peremier Pro. And I know that the opteron will destroy the x2, but I was just wondering if I will see enough of a difference to spend the additional $150 or so.

I also am thinking about the difference between the 3800 X2 and the opteron 170:\

But then someone said to buy the OEM version of the 170 and then for 15 bucks get the three year warranty.....:\
