Athlon 64?

Answer: Having a 64-bit CPU right now isn't necessary for most people. What makes the Athlon 64 such a great CPU is the fact that it performs so admirably in 32-bit apps. In most cases it keeps up very nicely with the P4, and in games it slaughters it. I own a P4 and am getting ready to do a system upgrade...and the only reason I'd go with a P4 again at this point is if I was a heavy multitasker (as in burning a CD + encoding a DVD + listening to a song in Winamp + playing a game of Doom 3 all at the same time). And cost isn't an issue since they are priced similarly. AMD knows that very few people would pay extra for an Athlon 64 right now since there isn't a need for a 64-bit CPU at this point.

That's about it right there.

64-bits is a moot point currently. The great performance we're seeing now is in 32-bit only. And when MS decides to get Win64 out, who knows how much MORE we will benefit? That is the advantage.
