Athlon 64 - XP SP2 DEP compatibility

Does anyone know if Microsoft or AMD addressed Athlon 64, XP SP2 DEP incompatability issue or are they still incompatible?

I had thought they resolved all this stuff when it made headlines last August. However I have had two new Asus K8N-E that BSOD with XP SP2 whenever DEP is turned on. With DEP off the system is stable. These are bare Windows XP SP2 installs without any peripherals and I have spent weeks troubleshooting without a resolution.

The only difference is when I use a BFG nvidia 6800GT with DEP on the XP will run with random BSOD or when exiting a UT2004 based game (Americas Army). When I use a ATI X800 Pro, XP SP2 will not even finish booting without a blue screen with DEP turned on "an attempt to execute non-executable memory".

RAM was tested vigorously with memtest and Microsoft's memory tester without errors. The system is also stable with DEP turned off in SP2.

Any ideas? thx

I didn't know there was an incompatibility. I've been using SP2 since I put my machine (A64 3200+ on Soltek MB) together a couple of months ago and haven't had any problems (well, no more than I normally expect from a MS OS).

The only reason I say this is because I can't seem to find any other reason. I am not doing anything odd, just installing WinXP, using the bundled drivers, trying the updated drivers, swapping at all the hardware but no matter what I do BSOD's continue with DEP turned on.

So I go back and start looking at articles like this which I thought had been resolved by now.

Same here (3000+ on Abit KV8 Pro).

There was alot hoopla in the media back in August over this and I had assumed it was fixed by now. Are you guys who have posted that you are BSOD free are you running with DEP turned on?

My system is stable otherwise but it seems I just can't run with DEP on.

As far as I'm aware the issue hasn't been fixed by Microsoft as yet, the only work around is to disable DEP.

I know there is an nVidia driver compatibility issue which impacts 66.XX and later drivers with DEP in some games on current Athlon64 and forthcoming DEP aware P4 processors, but that wouldn't impact you if your using the X800 Pro.

I had switched from the 6800GT because of this and a variety of other problems. Most of my other problems with the crappy nvidia drivers were resolved but now I have BSOD on boot up with the X800 Pro. Again only if I turn DEP on.

I would be curious to know is just everyone who has an Athlon 64 automatically turning DEP off to avoid the dreaded BSOD or it is just certain hardware configurations like mine that are suspectable. My next step maybe to dump the K8N-E again for anther socket 754 motherboard.

Do you have DEP turned on?

I'm using

[*]WinXP Professional with SP2, DEP fully enabled for all software
[*]Asus K8N-E Deluxe rev. 1.03 with 1005 BIOS
[*]2 x Corsair XMS 3200C2 @ SPD DDR400 2.6 volts
[*]Antec TruePower430 backed by APC BackUPS Pro 1000 with AVR
[*]nVidia 5.10 mobo drivers, minus the nVidia audio panel since it doesn't work on this board
[*]Just got my new 6600GT (booyah!!! ) running the 67.02 beta drivers

I have never seen a BSOD of any sort. And I've seen it do a DEP abort too, it's definitely working. Maybe post your full specs in excruciating detail for us (what cards, what slots they're in, BIOS revision, memory setup/voltages)?

Here are my specs, hope this helps. (this is my second K8N-E board)

Asus K8N-E Rev 106, bios 1005.002 (tried bios 1007 with last board, still bsod)
Athlon 64 3400+ Retail 2.4ghz
Kingston 1gb DDR400, PC3200 RAM part# KVR400X643CA/512 (passes memtest and Microsoft memory test)
Maxtor 6y120p0 120gb IDE
ATI Retail X800 Pro 256MB AGP, Catalyst 4.12 drivers (this replaced BFG 6800GT which also had BSODs)
added Audigy2 to slot 3 (had BSOD's prior to adding ATI/Audigy2)
Antec Truepower 430watt
Antec SLK-3700BQE 2X120mm fans front/back
Microsoft Windows XP SP2 CD OEM

All BIOS memory timings at auto/default. Memory set to DDR400.

And the CD is the real thing, right? Are you installing your mobo drivers before your video drivers (yes = good, obviously)? Any other utilities (Asus Probe or nVidia firewall stuff or ???) that runs at startup? Tried Safe Mode, and if so, what result?

Yes, COA looks real purchased from viosoftware.com. Mobo drivers were first thing installed after XP finished installing. Asus probe installed but not running, nvidia firewall not installed. The system is stable as long as DEP is off so safe mode also is not a problem. Also tried changing DDRAM voltages, no
difference.

UPDATE: I think I did fix the problem after removing the BFG 6800 GT late last night and adding the ATI X800 Pro in its place. I added Blackice last night also which seems to have its own issues with DEP. I turned that off and I have DEP on so now it is running without a BSOD. (15 minutes so far)

So it looks like it may have been the nvidia graphic drivers causing the problem.
