Athlon 64 X2 System

I am going to build a new system and have decided to go Athlon 64 x2 4400.
It will be a combination development machine and mini-server running Win2k server.

I intend to make this leap pronto - hoping the cpu will be available soon.

Would you kind folks assist me in choosing a compatible case, air cooler, MB, memory and anything else It might need? I'd appreciate it. I would like to OC this a little.

As far as cost is concerned, I do have a budget so the very best components are not really desirable.

I am attaching a quote from Monarch that I was working on. Any comments are very appreciated.

Thank you very much,

dont get the a8v deluxe. the x2 supporting bios is hardly functional, and you will have a lot of serious problems, especially in overclocking.

If you're having an OEM assemble it, you shouldn't have to worry about parts compatibility. They don't offer non-functional OEM systems.

I would omit the DVD drive and save some money. Also, unless you're OCing, budget RAM could save you $40 or so. And if you're at all concerned about noise, those HDs might not be the best bet.

Thanks. I do intend to OC to about 2.4 or 2.6 if it is stable. I do need a DVD copier so I might keep that one.

I am going to let Monarch assemble and test it. I would like to receive it almost ready to fire up and install the OS and boogie.

ASUS in general is not a safe road to travel. Go with MSI, DFI, or Abit. 🙂

Thanks. Would I want to consider an SLI board - no gaming or intense graphics will be done?

I reckon DFI has made great strides. Any specific bpard recommendation?

If you want to go SLI...I would say get the DFI NF4 SLI-DR. Best SLI board on the market. If not [ATI graphics card], then go for the DFI NF4 Ultra-D. Either one is a great choice.

Cough...you can tweak the Ultra-D into an SLI, with a small mod using a #2 pencil...cough. 😉

Thank you, Mr Fide. I think I will go with the NF4 SLI-DR unless someone has a convincing reason not to. I appreciate the information on the pencilical maneuver for the U-D but I am not that adventuresome anymore - especially with OPM (my company).

Cough... You can tweak the Nforce 4-D DFI to a Ultra and then tweak it again to an SLI .... Cough

P.S. You cant magically make the extra ethernet port appear though.

FWIW - unless you're experienced w/ overclocking, DFI motherboards can be quite intimidating due to the large number of tweaks available and may take a bit of time to get them stable.

In regards to Asus, outside of the A8N-SLI Deluxe, the A8N-e, A8N-SLI and A8N-SLI Premium are all excellent motherboards.

If I OC, I think I will go for a .2 to .4 max increase. Did you OC your A8N-SLI?

I am a novice OCer. Should I seriously think about just running at stock speed on the DFI or ASUS until some definitive OC information is available for them? Currently, i can draw OC info from posts but I haven't done this enough to even think about being proficient at it.

Thanks,

Actually the Asus boards have been one of the most rock solid...IF you aren't overclocking.
For stock speed, go either the Asus A8N-E or A8N-SLI...
For overclocking, go with the DFI Lanparty...
Either way, stick with the Nforce4 chipset.

Thanks,
My X2 4400+ is oc'd to 2.7ghz on my Asus A8N-SLI Premium. If you plan on mildly oc'ing, I would recommend the Premium. I just posted in another thread the benefits but IMHO:
1. Better board layout - 3 pci slots, pci-e x16 spaced further out for more ventilation
2. No noisy chipset fan - heatpipe used to cool nf4 chipset. DFI uses a fan that is placed where it most likely will be covered by your video card and may cause ventilation/cooling issues.
3. Less tweaking options allowing for a more stable overclock, especially a mild oc

A lot folks like to recite what they read but getting responses from actual users will be more helpful.

speaking from personal experience as i have owned the a8n-sli deluxe and 2 dfi sli-dr. i would go for the asus premium if overclocking is not an issue. it will be much easier to setup. however, if you want to overclock the dfi rocks. either way i don't think you can go wrong. by the way i just sold my fx-55 to get a 4400x2.

Thank you for the details on the A8N-SLI Premium. I am quite sold on it. I think I will strive for about 2.6 OC. Was there any issues with mounting the XP-120? Is there a HSF that would give good OC cooling? What is the best thermal grease to use today? I used Arctic Silver three years ago (my last HSF install on my Tiger MP 1.2 workstation - The 5v rail has me concerned right now. It varies between 4.26v and 4.62v (no mod)).

Thanks,

Congrats on going for the 4400x2. I am beginning to feel like a kid anticipating that much requested and mentioned birthday present.

I am sold on the Asus A8N-SLI Premium.

Thanks,

Will I be able to mildly OC the A8N-SLI Premium with either 1 GB DDR (2 pcs 512) PC-3200 (400) OCZ Copper (OCZ4001024PFDC-K) or 1 GB DDR (2 pcs 512) PC-3200 (400) OCZ Platinum Revision 2 (OCZ4001024ELDCPER2-K)

Thanks,
