$146 - Athlon 64 3000 90nm 939pin

??? 😕

Prices have almost always increased exponentially like that. They can extort more money from the super-high-end market.

Edit: OK, makes slightly more sense with the first reply there.

They didn't give a clock speed for the 4400+, but if it's basically a dual 3200+, yes, I would expect it to cost about twice as much as a 3200+. If not a bit more.

no...read it agian, they talk about the FX.

The only thing that Hexus article said relating to the 'FX' processors was:

Our source in Greenbriar also confirms that AMD currently has no plans to introduce 'FX' variants of its dual-core desktop processors.

If your question is "how much do you think the dual-core Athlon64/Opteron chips will cost?", I would say probably about twice as much as a single-core chip of equivalent speed, maybe a little more than that at first.

These will be out for S940 first (probably as an Opteron 1XX/2XX/8XX 'X2' or some such), then for S939 (probably using the monikers that Hexus gave).

AMD's dual-core Opteron due this month

"Expected pricing for the processors ranges from $851 for the Opteron 265 to $1,299 for the Opteron 275. For more powerful chips in the 800 series, prices range from $1,514 for the Opteron 865 to $2,649 for the Opteron 875."

With the Opterons at least, AMD is planning to charge a lot more than twice what they charge for similarly clocked single core chips. If they plan to make any attempt to compete with Intel, they will have to use a different strategy for the A64 x2.

The Pentium D will own it in price then. The 2.8Ghz model is priced at $241, AMD can't expect to compete with a $400 x2.

I would be surprised if Intel really prices that aggressively... but maybe they feel threatened enough to cut their margins. Dunno. They might be planning to couple the launch with price cuts on the single-core chips as well, so maybe the regular P4 2.8Ghz will be priced lower by then.

Or maybe we'll see AMD chips at more like 1.5x a single-core CPU's cost as well. That would be nice. I'm not holding my breath, though. 😛

I think they shouldn't charge more then 1.5 time current single core speeds since in apps that are multithreaded that will be about the potential performance gains.....some less some more....

4400 (2.0ghz) should be 280-300 depending on retail

4600 (2.2ghz) should be 380-400 depending on retail

4800 (2.4ghz) should be 540-560 depending on retail....

Otherwise I will be buying a P4!!!! a 4400 at the price I listed should be comparative to INtels 2.8ghz p4-D.....A 2.2ghz will beat a single core 2.8ghz prescott in about everything now...I expect AMDs dual core will be better due to memory issues and thus will hold the line and be probably better then INtels 3.0ghz dual core model in everything...
