Athlon 64 X2 6400+ or Phenom - Help me decide

I am building my first AMD system in quite some time.

I already have the motherboard (Jetway HA04 Extreme 790FX) but plan to get one of the new 790FX with 750SB as soon as they come out.

Right now, I have an Athlon 64 X2 5400+ but wasn't real happy with the benchmark results. Having gone from a E8500.

Anyway, I am not expecting the same results as the E8500 but would liek to get close.

I am considering getting the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ to replace the 5400+ but have also considered the Phenom 9600 or 9850.

My primary use is photoshop, office and I do play games occasionally. Usually COD4 or Halflife.

I have had bad experience with the Intel Quads in my COD4, it doesnt liek the Quad for some reason. (Maybe the Phenom will be differnt?)

Anyway, could I expect much performance boost going from the 5400+ to the 6400+?

Would the Phenom be a better way to go since the new 750SB are coming soon?

I do not overclock much...

So, based on what I have said, what CPU would you recommend, the 6400+ or the Phenom?

Any comments are appreciated

Personally, I dont think the 6400+ would be much of an upgrade at all.

If you go with a Phenom X4, I don't think I would get the 9600 unless it is the revision with the errata fix.

CPU Comparison

Photshop comparison

Just shoot for the 9850 and you should be good for a while.
