Hi all,

I've not built a new machine since, well. current box is p4 1.4 with (caugh) RDRAM. anyway I'm going Athlong 64 this round, but I'm a bit confused on which way to go. socket 754 w/a 2800 or a mobile version. The mobile version is lower wattage I can see that much but they fit in the same boards etc , why don't they just make them all mobile, anyway the 939's are just way out of my price range so anyone that's got the info I'll gladly listen, thanks in advance. ps i'm not going building this rig to overclock, I just want a nice quite stable gaming box. =)

If you're not going to game with it, you probably don't want an Athlon 64 2800+... you'd actually be better off getting a Barton and overclocking it... much cheaper, and the performance would be about equal. If you're going for an A64 for gaming, go with either the 3000+ or 3200+

I just saw your reply this afternoon, and just realized I made a typo... I corrected it, but... before I said "if you're going to game" and I meant to say "if you're not going to game." A64's are great gaming CPU's... but pretty much just a waste of money for anyone else who isn't going to be compiling programs or stuff like that.

If you do go with an Athlon-64 though, just know that the mobile ones don't come with a heat spreader, so the heatsink or the bracket for the heatsink may require modification to make proper contact with the core.

If you're not going to overclock, an A64 3000+ would be your best deal.
