Actually, that's not true. You'd have to cut a bunch pins off instead.

But seriously, in answer to your question: Not Soon Enough (to drive prices down so I can buy a 3200+ cheap!)

For quite some time, AMD was saying the 23rd of Sept. But now The Inquirer says Sept 30. One more week delay on this processor shouldn't bother anyone though compared to the previous delays.

However, no one knows if it will be another paper launch. Think about the last few T-breds. Or even the 244 Opteron that was in everyones benchmarks but still hasn't hit the shelves (why reviewers didn't review the immediately available 240 or 242 as much is beyond me).

Are you saying you can not get a 244 opteron even to this day??? If yes that is by far pathetic..AMD needs to quite paper launching as they are really embarassing themselves....

NOw are you sure you can't get one in germany or asia or throgh large OEM manufacturers in built systems???

Just by a 800MHZ p4 with HT and you would be better off. Or you can can wait for the 1.3MHz FSB and the faster DUal channel DDR boards. Thats what i am waiting for , maybe by then they will have the pci express on some boards

You can buy the 244 Opteron right here:

Pricegrabber

What I'm talking about is exactly those companies. For 2 months now they have been giving prices for the chip yet when you get further into the order you get a message saying availability in mid-June. That has been happening since the release of the Opterons. Maybe finally this mid-June date has arrived, but you still cannot get it in any relable place. Spartan Tech reseller rating 3.64 over the past 6 months. Or try another seller on that pricegrabber list: PC Connection, and click on Check for Availability link (then choose your state). I get this message:
Availability: On Back Order
Item#: 440999
Manufacturer: AMD
Product Name: AMD Opteron DP Server Model 244 Chip
Now try the same search for the Opteron 240. You'll find on pricewatch triple the number of companies listed for the 240 than the 244 as well as reliable companies like NewEgg selling it. NewEgg reseller rating of 9.81 for last 6 months.

Even The Inquirer listed the first date the 244 was ever sold was on May 26th and that was only in Japan. That was 1 month and 4 days after the April 22nd release.

I noticed the same thing when looking for 242 and 244 chips. They all list prices and when you go to buy them or email them, they are out of stock. I would hope that AMD would at least get the Athlon 64 up to 1.8 GHz at launch and maybe even have some chips for sale. But, judging by the only available Oppies which are running at 1.4 Ghz, it appears they are having some major production problems. Guess we will have to wait till Sept. 30 and see.

I'd like to point out what Digitimes is saying. "Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is said to plan to start small-scale shipments of its long-awaited K8-core Athlon 64 processors in August, earlier than its September schedule, sources revealed." Exactly what is meant by small-scale shipments is anybody's guess.
