Athlon 64 question

I'm building my little brother a new system as his socket a system is finally (athlonxp 1700+ @ 2100MHz) starting to show the signs it's had enough of being OCed. We're looking to get him a cheap socket 939 system. He wants the DFI LanParty board which leaves him enough for a new PSU, RAM, and just a 3000+ Venice. My questions are these: Does the AGP NF3 LanParty support dual core, and how well do the Venice chips run in asynch, as he only has PC2700 till he gets paid again? We're buying in spurts to strech what money he can spare.

Cliff Notes:
Need suggestions on Motherboard for 3000+ Venice.

The motherboard needs to be overclockable, and physically attractive (case has window.)

Does the NF3 Ultra DFI LanParty board support dual core, for a future upgrade?

How well do Venice chips run in asynch with PC2700?

Your thoughts on the 3000+ Venice A64?

1. Yes all 939 boards work with the X2 with a bios update as long as it is available For the DFI it is available.

2. Hard to say, at the Current prices of PC3200 or higher not people including myself have tried it. Whi Bandwidth is not the most important thing for the A64 in terms of upping the bandwidth, I doubt it will be as nice with downclocking the memory (not even sure if it is possible).

3. The Venice 3000+ is probably the best chip overclocking A64 ever. Most reports have all Venice chips at least hitting 2.6 and most hitting 2.8 (wich is the fastest A64 MHZ speed being sold). Being the cheapest A64 in the list it is the best bang for your buck. One Problem to watch for is without being able to change the Multiplier you might need to pay even more attention to the memory your going to use because getting to 2.8 will run your memory very high (you do the math i am lazy).

Don't buy an AGP board.. AGP is dead as a doornail and from sound of it you guys like to upgrade in parts.. why upgrade to out of date part the minute you buy it???. Save up for a PCIe board.

Even if you have a 6800ultra AGP you're better of taking a loss, selling it for $250 and getting a cheap PCIe care like x800xl or something. eitherway replace.

what video card you or he have?

No problem running async btw. I did with PC2100 on 939 only performance hits in a few tests.

Might want to check out ewiz.. 3000 venice for $110 shipped should help ease your pain of liquidating your AGP.

I am sorry Zebo but i Have to think that getting a cheaper AGP board and not losing his current video card, while still being able to get faster memory, is a better idea then to buy a more expensive board and and having to buy a new video card while running slower memory. Plus He overclocked his old Machine why wouldn't he want to overclock the best overclocking A64, but if he does and he sticks with his old memory it won't be possible (or worth it). In a Year SLI boards will have gotten to sub $100 and $150 max, plus we don't know what Crossfire is going to be like and wether SLI2 is going to require a new board. Picking up a AGP board isn't a Bad Idea as long as you know that in the future a Mobo exchange may be needed. As it stand though there is no performance difference between AGP and PCIe and to take a step back just to have PCIe support is an utterly retarded idea.

Present specs:

AthlonXP 1700+
Some MSI MicroATX nForce2 board
2x256MB Crucial PC2700
RADEON 9800Pro
Audigy2 ZS Gamer
200GB WD PATA drive
Liteon 16X DVD-RW
Liteon 16x DVD-ROM

He will be getting new RAM, we just thought we could throw it together and update it when he got the money for PC3200 or better. Also my lil bro doesn't upgrade all that often, it's just that the Audigy is giving him problems, and he's at his wits end. As for the graphics, he understands what's coming and he's willing to keep the RADEON for another year. He just wants a new CPU and Mobo, mainly. And of course his PSU is a generic POS so that's being upgraded too.

crucail PC2700 ought to be able to run 2-2-2 which is faster than cheap PC3200.. keep it most definitly. Crucail underrates thier ram. Crucail says CAS 3 while every stick I've ever had runs LL.

9800pro is good too.

I'd get that $110 A64 3000 and a Epox 9NDA3J for $200 total and OC to 2600Mhz with 133 memsetting for PC3000.

I like that. And I've had this RAM upto 184MHz at 2.5, so it's no slouch. Thanks. EDIT: I also don't really screw with the voltages on the RAM so it may even do better than that. Its rated as 2.5 at 166 but it'll do 2.0.

I actually dont think there are any really ugly motherboards out there, but if you want crazy pcb colors, UV sockets, etc, then you need a highend (and expensive 🙁) motherboard.

I think we may be going with an Epox NDA+ (I think that's the name). It's just green though. We were thinking of that MSI board, or the DFI, but I think saving $20 is more important now. :/

EPOX is ugly... old style green PCB.. but it's cheap..it's stable..it's a high clocker..

If you get it let me know.. there are some particulars which lead to better OC performance... eg bios settings, mem slots etc
