Athlon 64 Motherboard Suggestion??

I'm looking to get a new mb & AMD Athlon 64 cpu, however I see all these motherboards being talked about and I'm not sure what is a good board.

I'm looking for something thats not too expensive, supports A64 (socket 764), AGP 8x, SATA, On-board sound. It also should be reliable and be descent for overclocking.

Also, out of curiosity, can someone tell me the basics of the Sempron chips?

Thanks for your time,

Assuming you meant Socket 754 and not 764 (being that it doesn't exist), the king of 754 as far as overclocking goes is the DFI LanParty UT. If you'd rather you can easily take your pick of other Nforce 3 Ultra/250 boards based on your favorite manufacturer or feature set, but most people recommend the DFI overall.

Yeah, sorry about the typo. So the Nforce 3 boards are pretty good? I've seen a lot of Asus and Abit mentioned on here. I've had good luck w/Asus boards so far.

Anyone thats the best bang for the buck?

A good system for overclocking on a budget would be:
AMD Athlon 64 3000 Winchester (90nm)-170$
(+50$ for SLK948U and AS5, with a Panaflo fan)
Good NF4 board-120$ (not out for a few weeks-keep waiting!)
2x512mb Patriot DDR500-190$
Hitachi 160GB SATA/8mb drive-90$
Lite-On CD burner-22$
Sound card-integrated audio (You are'nt likely to notice that much of a difference on speakers less than 200$, anyways)
GEforce 6600GT-180$
Skyawk/Eagle Tech Silver Aluminum ATX Mini Server case, Model "MSR4611" -25$ (this is an all-aluminum case that screams "MOD ME!)
Coolmax 400W power supply-40$ (this would be a good thing to upgrade)

The sempron 3100+ is a low-cached 754 3200+, with 64-bit extentions disabled. It does not oveclock as well as the Winchesters, but at 110$, the price is hard to beat. However, it might be a while until S754 PCI-E boards are out, so you may as well spend the extra 60$ on a Winchester 3000+.

For the money the Chaintech VNF3-250 cannot be beaten... mine has worked out really well so far, overclocked well, it's fast and stable 🙂

Thanks for the system run down, I've got everything else from my existing system that I'm going to move over. This will more or less just be a mobo&cpu replacement.

The winchester core is the socket 9-- something or other, right?

Thanks for the info on the Chaintech board. Only $72

One guy said he had a hard time getting it to recognize is SATA HDD though. Do you have any experience with this?

The VNF3 works great with the Sempron for budget overclocking. However, if you want a S939 (winchester) box which can run a bit faster, you need to get a S939 board. The new NF4 boards, which have already started shipping to distributors, are about 120$ and support PCI-express. (the 6600 and x700 are both PCIe native, so they're great choices). They also support NCQ, SATA-300, and some other nifty features the NF3 does not.
Oh, and most SATA hard drives work just fine with the VNF3-250. I do'nt own one, but I have yet to hear that as a concern.

Oh I've also heard that the A64 processors are power hogs. I'm assuming I'll have enough power w/my upgraded power supply, but is this going to be a concern?

I have the asus k8v (non-deluxe) and let me tell you...IT BLOWS FOR OVERCLOCKING!!! No pci/agp lock, low voltage options, cannot manually adjust multiplier, etc. Just a bad board for overclocking.

In terms of non-overclocking board, I really love the k8v. It's one of the few (only) s754 boards that have 2 PATA connections, 1 SATA raid controller, and 1 PATA raid controller. This lets you have two opticals, on seperate connections (for on the fly junk). Also you can have a SATA hdd and PATA hdd on seperate controllers. Works out well for me because my primary hdd was SATA and sec was PATA.

Compared to Intels latest AMD's are anything but power hogs. I won,t give you a mobo maker but a really good Chipset for the AMD 754 is the SIS chipset very well priced and good performnce. just shop around via, nvidia Sis there all good chipsets but bang for the buck its hard to turn away from SIS

If overclocking is your goal, definitely stick with nForce 3 chipsets. The DFI LAN Party UT is definitely a great board, and should be all you need to push a s754 chip to its limits. =)

Hmmm. power hogs huh? So what are Intel chips then?

SiS, you are reccommending SIS!?!? SiS is HORRIBLE, Nforce>VIA>>>>>>>>SiS.

Wtf how do you reccommend a good chipset. There are only 2 chips for the mainstream market!!

Once again you reputation decreases with eveypost so once again:

I have to pimp the MSI K8N Neo. I have been running one for a few months now and it's been absolutely solid as a rock and fast as hell. 🙂

Ok.... So now I guess the question is... What motherboard? And what processor?
Do I get the cheaper Chaintech board and get the 3200+ instead of the 3000+ or what? What do you think? Thanks again.

I'd like to keep my price around $250 USD

MSI K8N Neo - $102 New - $64 Refurbished

The EPoX board I'm using right now is pretty good IMO. S754 w/ the nForce3 250Gb chipset. I've got an A64 3200+ running at 2.3ghz (slight OC) so far it's held up very well and has been very stable in the few weeks I've had it.

Should be on Newegg for under 75 bucks. I went the OEM route on the cpu though so I could opt for the Thermalright Xp-90 heatsink, which kicks ass btw, and have been happy.
