Should I trust Gateway?

Gateway is reliable as any other computer out there......

the graphics in the 7426 is a 9550 actually

We've already covered this. It's an underclocked 9600. The real (desktop) 9550 is a different animal altogether. Once again...27 fps, Aquamark 3... that's impressive even for a 9700.

Why don't you just buy the best performance laptop for your dollar, today? That's what I would do. I'm not an Intel "fan", I'm not an AMD "fan", I just buy what works. I wouldn't not buy something because I wasn't a fan of that company....I don't even know what that means. If you do have some irrational anti-Intel bias, I would reccomend:
1)Waiting for a 6800 card in an A64, because anything less with an A64 is not going to be a great gaming rig, and 2) Seek professional help.

Seriously, get over the AMD/Intel thing. Pentium M is the best thing that has happened to mobile computing since the LCD screen, and don't even think I'm kidding. Pentium M's are VERY powerful and actually allow a true mobile platform. A64's might have like a 10-15% lead in games, MAYBE, but they can't compare on battery life and the smaller form factor.

Moving on....................

By the time you're done building that one, it will cost more than the 7426gx and offer no performance advantages whatsoever.

Is that with an OS? Looks to be barebones

Yeah, thats without an OS, add $5 dollars for XP pro from your educational institution or add $79 if you want an OEM of XP Home.

Edit: and dont forget the barebones comes with a 128 meg 9700 vs a 64 meg 9550.

And what kind of warranty? What kind of lead time?

This all plays into the price difference between a ~$1250 Gateway and this $1280 barebones. Gateway is available today, pre-setup, with 1 year warranty.

I'm not saying either is better or worse, just pointing it out 😉

True, I agree with you, personally I'd rather service it myself then wait the two weeks it takes gateway to fix it, but to each his own. I've had real problems with the gateway profiles (all-in-ones) and hate having to wait for the box to come from gateway, send it back to them and then wait two weeks to get it back.

Plus, it looks like the gateway is back to 1549 at bestbuy, atleast online, haven't been to the store to check.

But if you get the one from BBY and you get the 3 yr PSP you get a free batt every year and if you fry the MOBO you don't pay 4 a new one.

I agree Gateway's service sucks. I have no personal experience, but I've not heard one good thing about it.
And the price for ~$1250 is onsale, they run the sales usually twice/month

Best Buy's PSP is nice, but for 300 bucks, they had my vaio from Nov. until March before they finally said we can't get a replacement board and gave me best buy bucks. Luckily I have other laptops through work, but I know if that was my only laptop, being without one for 5 months would have sucked. I haven't been happy with the best buy service and I'm sure there are countless others that would agree.

Where did you get that price?

That price is with comparable equipment. The 7426gx has a 3700...you outfitted the one in your example with a 3200. There are other differences.

As for "Gateway" service, it has it's advantages...such as a one dead pixel policy. That means, at Best Buy, you can keep returning laptops until you get one with no dead pixels. It's the only brand you can do that with. I learned that the hard way when I helped a friend pick out a Toshiba and we tried to exchange it because of a nasty dead pixel.

The manager explained why I was able to return three Gateways but my friend could not return a single Toshiba.

Bad for my friend, but it means that if a single pixel on my screen ever goes bad, I can replace the entire thing for free under best buy's PSP.

While I agree that those situations can happen, I guess I just assume that everyone knows the role of a customer in a retail store. You need to keep up with people in those situations and make sure they're doing what is right for you. With such a large operation, it is very easy for some aspects of it to fall through the cracks.
If I had to send my laptop off to BBY service, I would be following up everyday and when the amt of time became ridiculous to me, they would have a solution or a new laptop for me. But I guess that's just me 😉

I did follow up with them, atleast twice a week, sometimes more when they had given me a certain date and it had passed with no phonecall. The thing is, I got my notebook back in Jan. and they had put a mb with the ATI 7500 card in it instead of the ATI 9000 I originally had. So thats when they had to send it back out again and then another 6 weeks for them to tell me they can't get the part and junk it out.
