athlon 64 heatsink: problems

I am having major problems with installing the heatsink on my ATHLON 64 939 3000.

The processor goes in nicely, but when I tried to install the heatsink, it took a tremendous amount of force to get it to clip onto both tabs. When I finally got it clipped in, it was impossible to rotate the plastic safety arm. So, the heat sink is clipped in but I can't engage the plastic retention arm.

Did I do something incorrectly? Its not clear how this thing is supposed to attach!

I have not powered it up yet, I would prefer to make sure everything is secure before applying power. Any tips?

It is not uncommon to use a little bit of force to get the clips to go into the socket. Usually it is easiest to clip clip on one side of the socket then use a flat bladed screw driver on the side with the notce to use a little bit of leverage to made the clip in process a little easier on your thumbs. After you have the processor in the arm should not be that hard to clip in just rotate it and it should lock in place. The other option is look in to a Zalman cooler. These are VERY nice. it will actually bolt into the socket not to mention they are very quiet and help to cycle the air in your case.

Check this out, videos on how to install AMD's. Some of the older AMD's require you put lots of force on the clips to lock them in place. Check the videos out.

Thanks for the link.

I tried taking the heatsink off. Its not not going anywhere, but at least I know that it is hard and flat against the processor.

I dread the day when I will upgrade to dual core. Its going to be very stressful to remove the heatsink. I think I will do as OritionX suggested and get a Zalman cooler.
