I was looking through the various socket 939 procesors on Newegg's site, when I decided it's about time I figure out why there are different cores.

I've got a s754 Clawhammer 3200+, which is clocked at 2.0Ghz (w 1mb L2 Cache), yet I see that on the s939 CPU's, the Winchester cored 3200+ is 2.0GHz w/512KB L2 cache. The s754 3200+ w/Newcastle is clocked at 2.2 GHz, so I am wondering exactly how the Winchester's make up for this 200MHz?

The only difference I see is the Process is 0.13 Micron on the Socket 754 and 90nm on the Socket 939's, and I'm not even sure what this means...

Can anyone tell me how these s939 chips make up the extra speed??

As I understand it the 90nm 939 chips are ever so slightly more effcitent clock for clock compared to the 754s. They also support dual channel. The main reason for their popularity, however, is that they give out less heat and use less power than their 754 counterparts. They have also proven to be awesome overclocking chips.

Just realized I didn't answer your question.
A winchester core (939) 3500 will not out perform its 754 counterpart. If you do not intend to overclock, then the only real advantages of 939 are dual channel support and better upgrade paths.

 
939 gives an extra 200 points to it cause it supports dual channel memory. 1mb instead of 512 also gives 200 extra points. your best bet is to get a good 939 board and a 939 winchester 3000. overclock it to near 2.6 ghz
 
What's the best s939 board for overclocking then. And the 3000+ and 3200+ only have 512k Cache, not 1MB, so only the "more efficient clocks" would account for the extra speed...

A good 3000+ will reach 2.6
A good 3200+ will reach slightly higher than 2.6
A good 3500+ will reach 2.75

Which mobo's are the best for OCing though??

From that, I'd say go for the 3000+, that's a nice speed for a CPU that starts at 1.8GHz...
 
Right now the MSI K8N Neo2 platinum is probably the best MOBO out for socket 939.

That may change in a month or two with the release of nforce4 and the DFI board.

Keep in mind though taht not all those chips will reach those speeds. If you get a good chip, it should be achievable though.
 
Is the DFI board going to be the Lanparty, or something else. Possibly one that will use the NF4 chipset??
