Athlon 64 buying help

OK. So a friend of mine wants to get a new computer. He does not want to spend too much. He will use the internet, AIM, and some games (Battlefield 2 and some other ones). So he wants to get an AMD Athlon 64 maybe something like a 3000+. I told him to get the Socket 939 Athlon 64 with the Venice core. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103537

Also need a good motherboard. I was thinking of an Asus a8n.

I don't know too much about the Amd cpu's. I have a P4 2.8E

Any suggestions?

First off, you have to decide if he's going to have a PCIe card or an AGP card. For a system like that, a 6600gt sound like a good match, and 6600gt's are cheaper in the PCIe flavor, so you should get an nForce4 based board. Both the Epox 9NPA+ Ultra and the DFI Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra-d are good boards, but the DFI board has the potential to be more of a headache than the Epox does.

The Abit AN8 is a great board, out of the box. I'm running at stock settings, and it peforms excellent, and is stable.

Plus, its pretty low in price now as well

Is he overclocking? Buying a new vidcard? He knows that BF2 really needs 2Gig of RAM to run well right? What's his budget? Before we know these things the advice you get won't do you much good.

Id say wait a little while and get the 3800+ X2 at $340 some. Otherwise pritty much any Nforce 4 boards will work at stock. If you want agp, I'd go with MSI Nforce 3 because its the best and pritty cheap now. Ya get 2x1Gig of ram if he wants to play BF2.

You really don't need 2gb of ram to play bf2, but it does help. I've got 1gb, and the only problems I face (aside from the random crashes and video corruption) are horrible stuttering durring the first 30seconds, during which everything is loaded into the ram. I just make it a habit to spin around until I can do it without stuttering, and then I'm good for the rest of the match.

a8n is a great board, avoid the dfi for a noob, to much stuff going on and gets confusing. more of an experienced board.

OK Thanks. By the way 2 Gb for Battelefield is a little too much for me. 1 Gb will do. I will a 2.8 and 1 Gb of ram and a 6600 Gt Oc and it works fine on 1024 resolution but no Aa or Af.
