Athlon 64 antivirus

Does one need to enable Athlon 64 antivirus technology or is this automatically functioning if SP2 is installed? The reason I ask is because SP2 complains that there is no antivirus found, BUT I do realize this simply may be because other 3rd party software is still recommended. Thanks!

I think you misunderstood my question. The Athlon 64 has built in virus protection against major worms etc, but it states on the CPU box that you must have SP2 installed. However, is there anyway to KNOW it is turned on or functioning?

Athlon 64 has no embedded antivirus, it just supports the no-execute feature, which under some situations will prevent the execution of specific "suspicious" instructions. This feature by no means replaces a real software anti-virus and yes you need one as SP2 suggests.

But then I assume these antivirus-esque features are automatic though, correct? I am just confused because AMD clearly calls this built in antivirus technology and states that in order to work, required SP2 to be installed. Thanks!

I have instructions for fully enabling Data Execution Prevention for all programs (except those you make exceptions for) on this page under the Ongoing Prevention section, down about one screen. You don't need to do anything to get the A64's DEP going, but you can enlarge the scope of stuff that it's applied to.

I also suggest the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer scan linked there, and don't neglect to fix weak/blank passwords.

Thank you, that is what I was looking for. I will leave it as it is... Just wanted to make sure what it did offer was on at least on the default level. Thanks again.
