I am looking to pick up a new heatsink for my Athlon 64 3200+ and was wondering if there was a heatsink, (non-phase change or water cooled) that would support the chip passively. I have been seeing some people post temperatures of <40c under load with the standard fan, and I was wondering if it is possible to have a passive systems, and if so what heatsink would I use?

phase change and water cooled systems are not passive, unless you count that ridiculous "resorator" radiator. I would try zalman air cooled products, but for a truely passive computer without breaking the bank.. under volting and some loss of performance is necessary

I wouldn't run a 3200+ without a fan at anything over 1.6 ghz/1.2 volts. At that speed/voltage you may be able to swing it with decent case cooling. I'd see how low you can go on the volts at stock speed first, then underclock a little maybe. The only experience I have here is that with my panflo L1A at 12v, cpu temps never break 40C, when I drop the fan to 7v, temps get up to 45C. At 7v, I'd guess the L1A is putting out maybe 12 - 15 cfm which isn't much, without a fan you'd probably see 50+ load temps (with Cool/Quiet enabled idle would still be pretty low).
