Athlon 64 4000 vs. Athlon 64 X2 4200

Okay.. I was lokking through my PC junk and noticed that I have this lovely 4000+ single core CPU in a box some upgrade I did. I am running a X2 4200 at the moment.

So any who.. what is the difference besides the 4200 X2= Dual core @ 2.2mhz and 4000+ is 2.4 mhz?

Yes I tried the Seach, just tells me to log in.. lol

That 4000+ is a 2.4 Ghz San Diego Core with the larger 1 MB L2 cache.

The 4200+ is basically two 2.2 Ghz Venice cores with 512 kb L2 cache stuck together.

True. However many more applications today are capable of using two cores than was the case several years ago when these processors came out. In almost every case, two cores at 2.2 GHz is better than one at 2.4, including most games, which have been very slow to begin to take advantage of more cores.

The 4200+ could be a windsor though having 1mb cache/core.

This is whats pissed me off so badly about the A64 naming scheme, an Athlon 64 4200+ could be a completely different socket then an Athlon64 4200+, while at the same time an Athlon64 4200+ could have twice the cache of the Athlon64 4200+, but the Athlon64 4200+ is based on 65nm technology while the Athlon64 4200+ is 90nm, so the Athlon 4200+ gets better IPC, but the Athlon 4200+ can overclock higher.

Its like what the hell were they thinking?
