Athlon 64 3800+ obsolete?

So AMD came out with the 4000+ and FX55 recently. Does that mean that the 3800+ is obsolete? Is it going the way of the 6600GT?

Huh? I'm under the impression that the difference between teh 3800+ and the 4000+ is 512k of cache, and I imagine that 512k of cache will cost something. The 4000+ makes the FX53 obselete, because it the same chip, the 3800+ is a cheaper chip that isn't as fast, not obselete. And what about a 6600GT is obselete?

uhh new parts come out on a weekly basis, it doesnt make the other stuff "obsolete"

if you are someone who always has to have the very very fastest, very very best, then plan on upgrading every couple days.

lol, by the way my old network server/router is obsolete, i just retired it a couple months ago. it is a pentium1 120mhz with 96mb edo ram 😀

Who decides what is obsolete? Something is only obsolete if it no longer serves a valid purpose to you.

Of course - many articles will say that unless you have the most newest, recent video/sound card, motherboard, case and fans and neon tubing - that your system is obsolete or 'on its way out'.

The FX-55 came out right after I purchased and installed my FX-53. I don't care =) I make my systems last a long time. Before this new set up, I had a pretty old system up until just a week or so ago. A pentium 4 1.3 GHZ Sony Vaio PCV RX370DS Sure, it had maxxed memory to 512k, a upgraded video card (GeForce Verto 4000 with 64 DDR - which is now in my new system - Hoping those high end video cards will go a bit 'obsolete' so I can afford one 😉 ), etc .. I made it last a long time, though. For the record - I bought that sony Vaio when it was new technology - when the 1.5 GHZ pentium 4 was THE pentium to have, and the 1.3 ghz was pretty darn close to having top of the line as far as Intel goes.

So that's a pretty long time period of making it work for me. I still don't even feel that my old system is obsolete. I can use it for a *lot* of things. Have it set up for my pop, who uses it to listen to streaming data through winamp of old time radio shows. I also use it to crunch Seti work units on the side, along with my new system. =D

At any rate, when I read articles about new technology - I take it with a grain of salt when someone says that something is obsolete - or better then something else. It's all relative. Until the majority of games being made can't run on a 6600 GT becomes a reality - I wouldn't consider it obsolete at all. The only reason why I bought such 'new' parts is that because I really do plan on making this sytem last me a very long time. I'm quite proud that I managed to build a system on my own - which will probably make me a bit less scared down the line of modifying my current set up.

I think the phrase 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' applies here. There is no such thing as obsolete computer parts. Prior to giving my pop my 'old' system, he was using a pentium 200 mmx system to surf the web and stuff. Granted for people here, we need a bit more updated technology. I'm just trying to make a point of how obsolete is not as written in stone as a lot of articles and push for new technology makes things out to be. I hope I'm making sense here - I know I tend to go on a bit of a philosophical stride. I'm sure the 6600GT has plenty of time before anyone needs to think about worrying? =?)

The 4000+ is basically a FX-53 without the unlocked multiplier. It has 1 Mb L2 and 2.4 Ghz.
Saying that the 6600GT is obsolete is like saying that a FX-53 is outdated.

When a part A is replaced by a part B that is perfectly compatible and at least equal or better to part A in everything, then part A is obsolete. Here you should consider price, availability, speed, heat generated (there might be other factors).
I'd say it's not the case (but that's just my opinion)

I have a hardcore gaming machine like that too!

This has to be flamebait...

Going the way of the 6600GT...

The 6600GT came out after the 6800 series... its a midrange solution, at no point was it a "market leader". The 3800+ is still a great CPU, itll just come down in price now that the 4000+ is out.

Many argue that the 4000+ doesnt even deserve its rating as its only a cache increase and not clockspeed, so the performance gains over the 3800+ are near nil.
