Athlon 64 3200+ 512k and Athlon 64 3200+ DTR 1MB physically interchangeable?

I have a MSI Neo Platinum board, and ordered the DTR (mobile) version of the 3200+ to get the extra 512k of cache. I've since read that the chips may not be physically interchangeable, in the sense that regular CPU fans won't fit the DTR version of the chip. Is this true, or more specifically, is this true for the MSI Neo Platinum?

I have the thermaltake Venus 12 CPU fan, if it makes a difference.

Just trying to find out from someone who knows before I actually grease the chip up.

Thanks.

The DTR's are socket 754 just like the reg. A64's.

The only 2 problems you might have is you need a heatsink that will work with DTR's as they have no heat spreader. and 2nd if the board will accept the chip.

So check out your Heatsink to see if it will work with DTRs and update your Bios to the newwest one and look for a thread here about Mobile A64's and what boards work.

the problems with the DTR as Marlin said is that they dont have a heatspreader.. this may present a small gap with most heatsinks and will in worst case burn your CPU. So its important that you check that the heatsink will work with DTRs.

Also your mobo might not support the DTR without a BIOS update.

Well, I solved the heat sink problem - the mounting bracket for the heat sik had 4 little plastic stubs that held the heat sink up about 1.5 mm; took them out with a razor blade and the heat sink now sits directly on the surface of the processor.

But, it won't post (actually, it did post a couple times, but I can't seem to get it to do it again) - I'm assuming because I need to flash the BIOS of the MSI k8N Platinum I have.

Which leads to the next question: Is there any way to flash the motherboard without getting a different non-DTR processor to boot the board?

Could I boot to BIOS without a processor and pull a new BIOS version off a floppy for example?

Thanks,
Chris

OK, another update:

Popped the CMOS battery, and it now posts. I'm currently having XP repair itself (As I just hauled over the HD from my old athlon setup and I don't think it likes the new setup) and, assuming that works, I appear to have one problem left:

I've got 2 double-sides 512 MB DIMMs, which should get me to 1 GB, but it's only recognizing 256 MB.

Ok, now on this system - have it at 210MHz and 10x multiplier.

I'll post more about the experience in the DTR motherboards thread.
