Im really wanting to build a new A64 based machine, but i simply cant justify the price of a 3200+ at about $400 when a P4 3.0 is $265. Does anyone have any idea when a 3000+ version would be released?

As far as I know, 3200+ is as low as they'll go. I too wish to upgrade but alas an A64 would far out tax my financial resources.

Being able to run and taking advantage of features are completely different things.

I can run Win9X on a SMP system too if I decided to.

Edit: Actually installing DOS 6.2 or OS/2 on a Athlon XP (Barton, Thoroughbred, whatever) might be a better comparison.

Then, you should correct your sentence, as "without OS support" is different than "taking advantage of features in the Os.... " ;)

I thought the P4 3.2C still stomped the A64 3200+ ? It's only the FX51 that can compete, right?

It depends on the application... I can show you 2 or 3 benchmarks where my laptop XP-M 2000+ embarrases some 2.6C desktops (mathcad, maple 6.0).... or some other where a humble 2.4C will beat my 2500+ at 3200+.....

The general concensus is that the Athlon XP 3200+ is overall closer to a 3.0C.... a lot of people got the idea that the Athlon were almost dead when the majority of the websites started using thibngs like lightwave or 3dsmax..... supposed to be workstation applications, but I still wonder why no one tries AutoCAD...... you will see it the way you want according to the glass you use ;)

Wait, you are referring to an Athlon 64 3200+, right? Then disregard my previous paragraph..... an Athlon 64 will beat a P4 in almost anything, except those 3dsmax and similar stuff, plus video encoding. However, for video encoding, well, I already stated that when the sites start testing video encoding at high quality settings or apply filters then I will buy their 100+ fps..... I still don't know any serious video fan who encodes at fastest settings.....

What reviews are you reading to say that the 3.2C stomps the A64 3200+?

exactly..besides i swore to myself my next cpu will be twice as fast (in ghz) as my current 1.6ghz XP1900 - and the 2ghz on the A64 just dont make it for me....sorry :)
I know that the A64 is a good performer..but i want more than 2gz and LESS than $420 !greets

Get a culeron 2.8 and overclock it to 3.2.... it should beat an athlon 64 as it has more megahertz....

Though I would love to argue semantics with you it would severly derail this thread.

And yes grant2 you're right there is always Linux. However my guess is that Linux isn't top of his list of OS choices.

The 3.2c may not stomp the A64 3200+, but over the entire range of applications, it is the faster chip. For example from techreport.com's review:
The Athlon 64 3200+ maybe trails the P4 3.2GHz in overall performance by the thinnest of margins.

The A64 is indeed a very powerful chip. Keep in mind that Intel has very mature chipset offerings my a number of mb makers. As the chipsets for the new A64 mature, expect it to surpass whats out there now.

MHZ isnt everything, which has been proven since 2001.

It will be interesting to see if this one or the 2.0 512k cache is going to actually be faster.
