i hav 64 3000+(no oc) with aop-6400 cooler on antec 370bqe case. my temps are very high. i tried to run 3d mark but mbm alarmed about temperature(70C) i hav
thermal paste(thin layer, i know) iv installed cpu fan twice, first time i had littel bit too much grease. so is my mobo showing too high temps or wht? when i open my case, temps drop(60->53)

What kind of thermal paste did you use? I recomend Artic Silver 5. What kind of heatsink and heatsink fan do you have?

60C idle!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats way too hot.

You either:

1) did not apply the thermal compound correctly (too much OR too little can be a problem)
2) secured the HSF incorrectly (not enough clamping force)
3) have REALLY bad case circulation (like no fans)
4) high ambient temps (is your house's heater on?!?)
5) have a crap455 HSF (

or a combination of any of those

For an A64, I'd go with Thermalright, Swiftech, or Zalman.

My A64 3200+ @ 2.3 runs 35 to 37C idle w. a Swiftech MCX6400V w/ 92mm antec case fan.

My apartment is kept around 72-78F year round.

Best solution is to start with the HSF, take it off, follow the directions on applying thermal compound CORRECTLY, and remount the HSF, leave the case cover off for testing.

as i said i installed cpu cooler twice. first time i had too much grease. second time i left very very thin layer(i removed and cleaned cooler. didnt add any paste cos cpu had som alrdy) what does hsf mean? i used screws to tighten cpu cooler. i think its enough tight now, so that cant be it. case circulation should be okay. i have 1 rear(120mm) fan and power fan. anbient temp should be around 22-24C

HSF = Heat Sink Fan

Are you telling me that you have 2 exhaust fans and NO intake fans? Your scaring me dude.

Post some pictures if you can I have a feeling your doing the install very wrong.

Also, If it is true that you have no intake fans, just take the side of your case off completly for now. Don't drill holes, thats ghetto.

What mobo are you running?? Touch the heatsink and check to see if its too hot to touch. Im guessing its a bad motherboard reading. On my MSI K8N my A64 3000+ reads 60 idle and 68 load! But its a common problem with this motherboard and the heatsink is very cool.

you dont need to have intake fans, though it does help a bit. many cases now, like the antec sonata require only a single exaust fan. then again, the sonata does run a bit warm, but not to the point where the cpu is unoperable.

You need to remove ALL of the greese before you reapply the heatsink. You're not supposed to have a "thin" layer of thermal paste, you're supposed to have almost none. A 'layer' will give you high temps. Thermal paste is only there to fill the microscopic valleys in the heatsink, not to act as a buffer between the two. C'mon man... this is common sense. The HSF draws the heat from the chip, if there's something in the way, it won't draw away the heat as well.

Are you sure the HSF is on tight enough? My guess is that you can wiggle it a bit. Don't say "that can't be it", because you're probably mistaken

You need more than one rear fan.

Why do you think your ambiet temps should be around 22-24C? 90% of the people on this forum don't have rigs with temps below 35C...

that HSF only has a 21.1CFM fan. It will not be sufficient to move nearly 60W of heat.

Heatsink is impressive, however, there just not enough air flow to cool down the heatsink.

If possible, I would mount a more powerful 70x70x25 fan and see if temp improves

My A64 3000 is 33-36C idle w/ CnQ enabled. Under heavy load (like UT2004 for an hour or more), about 60C max. With CnQ off, it idles around 44-46C. I'm not entirely sure of the case temp (no sensor), but my room is probably about 75-80F (central air is set to ~78, but I have a ceiling fan, so that lowers the temp just a bit).

I actually want to get new fans, the ones that came with my case (Kingwin KT-424-BK) are decent, but I want something that cools better. The noise isn't really an issue, but I don't want my case to be too loud.
