I'm not sure what the deal is, but when you look at the My Computer properties it shows my grandmother's laptop as being an Athlon 64 3000+ @ 701 MHz. Is this a potential problem? I just thought it was strange, but I'm not sure if it actually might reflect the performance of the machine itself.

Any ideas?

Damn, I'm looking at the RightMark CPU CLock Utility and it actually is running at 797 Mhz! I thought it felt sluggish but I figured it was just the number that was playing with me...

It suppose to run low at 800 and then throttle up to 2000. Just leave the utility open and open up a word doc or pdf and you will see it jump up to full power.

I agree with what others have said here - leave Cool and Quiet on for a laptop. If you need extra power the CPU will throttle up. There's no reason to have it maxed all the time. C&Q will extend battery life. Further, frankly, many laptops can get on the hot side if you run them full blast all the time.

Also, I tend to doubt your grandmother has noticed any performance problems with the machine. Most people have a laptop for a reason, and will gladly trade a little annoyance (time for CPU to throttle up) for longer battery life any day.

If you insist on turning it off, try and set it up so it is only off when the laptop is on AC power, and on when on battery power. You should be able to do this in the power control panel (I think).

Throttling the CPU doesn't take the kind of time that a human(or any other animal for that matter) would stand a chance of noticing, by a long shot.

I had the same problem with my Compaq Laptop; however, even under load, it didn't ramp up the multiplier.

I found somewhere on the web the solution -- go to AMD's website and be sure to install the right CPU driver.

If you look in device manger->Processor-> it probably says something generic.

You should end up with AMDK8.sys ( or similar ) for your processor driver.

Install the latest driver 1.2.2, xp installs 1.0 I believe and that may be the problem.
