hi all,

I was kinda wondering what other people out there are getting for their chip themps for the a64 2800+. i have the stock amd heatsink on there, with arctic silver 5. i had the stock thermal pad that came on the heatsink and my temps were the same as they are now with the arctic silver. at idle they are about 50 deg C and at load they are 60 deg C. i have adequate cooling in the case (2 80mm and 2 120mm) running on an "automatic" mode where they spin up if the case temp rises to a certain point. so far, they have not gone out of quiet mode, and one has the sensor on the cpu heatsink. btw, i know that there have been some problems with the newcastle core and mobos reading the temperature correctly. I have the MSI K8N Neo Platinum. It reads about 20 deg higher when i first start the machine, and then i reboot from windows and the temps are read correctly. CPU Fan is set on high, with no RPM adjustmetns enabled. I was wondering if this is what a lot of other people were getting, or am i all wet. I dont think its anything on my part (2 different mountings of the same heatsink with two different thermal substances), could the chip monitoring be crap still, or does this chip just run that hot??

thanks in advance for a reply, and any advice that you might have.

p.s. the darn thing is trying to make me a liar and it is idling at 46 right now.

Can you tell us what your ambient room temps are? 'Cause it's a bit hard to tell from just temps you're giving. Also, are you using AMD's Cool & Quiet thing?

Those temps seem a little high to me, on face value. Especially if Cool & Quiet is enabled. But if room temps are 30C, or if the motherboard is reporting too high, then it could be fine. Not much way we can tell about that though. Update the motherboard to the latest bios and see if that changes the temps - newer versions often report the temp better.

ambient temps are about 20-25C. I believe that the cool and quiet thingy is off. I have the newest bios that MSI released, but im kinda leary about that because of the initial reading being to high, and then completely different when i reboot. after that first reboot, then they seem to level off. Im not getting any irratic behavior from the system, rock stable for the month ive had it, im just wondering if these are correct.

My ambient temp hangs around 25C. My amd64 2800+ stays at around 37C idle and 44C load. I have stock HSF with stock thermal pad.

dbiehl1979, ive heard successes with some of the beta bios that have been released around the MSI forums. I believe 1.42 and 1.43 have had some luck fixing the problem with the Newcastle core. Its probably just the sensor glitch anyways and if your stable i wouldn't worry too much.
